Chapter 40

A loud bang echoed around the concrete prison block. Alex jumped to the ground, with Kevin and all, hoping to avoid it. Surprisingly, he felt no pain at all. Turning around, Alex saw the soldier lying on his back, bleeding from his forehead.

" Get up dork! We've got to go!" Elle told him, lifting Kevin off her boyfriend.

Alex reached into his belt, running over to where Chrissy and the rest were still shooting. He had to use the tear gas to block the British soldiers from hitting them.

Once again, Nightmare Pair was separated. Alex knew that Elle would be alright. In fact, she ought to have escorted Kevin to a van by now.

" Chrissy! " he shouted, before throwing the tear gas. All the force members, Chrissy, Daniel, Will and Avi started running away from them.

Most of the prisoners had gotten out already. The five of them leaped through the gaping hole in the wall. Alex just saw Kevin being pushed onto the back of a van, whilst the last of the bicycles were being cycled away.

All of the sudden, a blur started tk streak past them. Alex made a wild grab at the person, stopping them in their tracks.

" Let me go! Macy is still inside!" Tyler shouted, pushing at Alex.

" Tyler! It's not safe inside! We have to go already!" Chrissy yelled.

Tyler looked around wildly, as if torn between looking for Macy or staying outside. Alex saw one of the vans drive off. They had to get on now.

But none of them moved. Everyone was waiting outside, guns and knives at the ready. It was true, everyone was accounted for except for Macy. Alex had not even seen her inside the prison block at all.

They waited. Hoping that the blond would be able to find her way out with a few more seconds of waiting. Alex saw a soldier coming to their right. He fired a bullet in their direction before Alex could stop him.

There was a loud sound from beside him. Elle was on the ground, holding her knee. Alex instantly dropped to his knees, surely she had not been hit by the bullet? Her hands were tight around her leg, and when she looked up at him her eyes were wide with pain.

" Shit," Alex whispered, putting his hands against her and lifting her off the ground. He started to run towards the van, where Kevin was.

Alex lay her down gently, and tore off a spare strip of cloth from the rag hanging in the van, tying it around her knee. Elle was breathing really fast, so much faster than a normal human would. Her face was deathly pale, and pure fear shone behind her pupils.

" You're going to be okay," Alex whispered, tucking her sweaty hair behind her ear.

" Go back out and herd the rest to the van. It's time we left," Elle whispered, before pushing Alex out of the van.

Alex ran out, back to where they were waiting. He saw Tyler encouraging someone towards him. Looking carefully, he saw Macy still in the building, running as fast as she could outside. Blood stained her shirt, from a wound in her shoulder. She looked like she was limping, but she was running.

Tyler moved closer, prepared to hurry her to the van. Chrissy and Daniel ran go the van first, with Daniel in the driver seat, starting the engine first. Alex waited with Tyler.

" Tyler! Wait a while more!" Macy shouted, her sprint slowing.

" Quick, Macy! We got to go!" Tyler shouted, already running to the back of the van, where everyone else was waiting for them.

All of the sudden, there was a loud bang.

Alex felt his hesd turn back sharply, only to see soldiers running towards them, guns firing. Macy was gone. On the floor lying down, one arm outstretched towards the outside, eyes wide open. Alex knew that the bullet had hit in the back of her head.
