Kirstin sat down by herself, away from where the others were. She drew her knees in to her chest, wrapping her arms around her legs.
She was going to die. That dog was wild and crazy, she was pretty positive that it had rabies. Kirstie looked at her wound, hidden by the bandage.
Her friends had managed to stop her from dying of blood loss, but there was no way they could stop the infection of rabies. Soon, she would be consumed by the bacteria.
It would make her crazy. No control over herself. Saliva that contained the virus. She would rather kill herself than to let herself be overcome by this kind of virus.
But not now. Only when it really started getting to her brain and system.
" Kirstie, why are you still awake? You need more sleep for that wound to heal."
She turned around, and saw Avi standing not too far away, in a black coat. His features blended in with the shadows, if it was not for the glint in his eye, she would have missed him.
He started to walk towards her.
" Avi stop! I have a contagious disease," Kirstin reminded him. It pained her terribly to admit to herself that she was going to die soon, but she quickly shoved that thought away.
She had fought so hard for where she was today. To think that the thing that was going to kill her was not fighting for her country, but because a stupid dog bit her.
" Silly girl, it's only contagious if I have direct contact with your saliva, and that kind of stuff. If I don't kiss you, I'll be fine, " Avi said, sitting down beside her.
Kirstin let out a low, unhumourous laugh, before leaning her head on his chest. Instinctively, he put his hand around her shoulders.
They were like family to one another. And Kirstin hated to admit, but she would desperately miss everyone here in the camp. The mission was two weeks away. She would never know the result of it.
Alex G was already dead. One of her best friends. Gone. Because of a stupid bullet from a British soldier in some important organs. She did not want to be next.
" Avi. Can you be the one to kill me when the rabies fully hits?" Kirstin asked, glancing up at him.
He said nothing. Not even reacting. She wondered briefly if he had somehow fallen asleep already. It would not surprise her either, it was two in the morning. He had had a busy day.
" Kirstin. We aren't fully sure if there really is rabies," Avi told her. His grip around her shoulders tightened as he said this.
She tried to put that thought, that possibility, and flicker of hope, in her mind. But quickly shook it away.
Kirstin had seen the dog. It was not okay. Eyes were wide and yellow, foaming-like spit dangling from its mouth. That animal was not safe.
" Promise me you'll kill me before I infect anyone, " Kirstin said again.
Avi looked at her. Kirstin stared right back.
" Avi, I can't kill myself. I have not enough courage for it."
He looked away.
" Avi..." Kirstie begged, shaking his arm. She would have asked Scott and Mitch any other day, but seeing how they awkwardly avoid her after the bite made her realise something.
Scott and Mitch had been with her for too long to actually be able to slide a knife through her throat. And they were not experienced enough to know that killing her was necessary. Their hearts were too soft. But Avi was stronger.
