-With this, everything will be in place." I smirked while looking down at the map of the academy, all the different pawns representing the disciplinary committee members placed down just at the right place to create and intricate web. "This plan is simply the perfect." I muttered to myself as I reviewed the path our targets would be headed down and all the traps I had set on the way.
-Which target are you referring to?" Asked Arthur as he glanced at me with a raised eyebrow,
-Lucas Wykes." I answered with a devilish smile as tipped over the red pawn.
Letting out a long sigh, Arthur leaned back in his chair, which I had moved to be right next to mine, before changing the subject: "And what about preparing for an attack from the Alacryans?"
-We searched the entire campus for a teleportation devise or any traces of enemies' movement or set up and found nothing." I reminded him, "Plus the Unity agents I sent to look around Xyrus academy didn't find anything strange that could be used as part of a terrorist attack. So, unless they plan on coming in one by one through the regular teleportation portals, which I can effortlessly destroy, I can't do much more to ensure our safety." I explained with a shrug off my shoulders. "Everything else is up to the kingdom of Sapin, I can't be blamed if they can't prevent a terrorist attack on their own ground after I gave them a heads-up."
-You can be very cynical at times." Noted Arthur as I looked back down at the map.
-I guess." I answered after having a small back and forth in my head. The truth simply was that even though I want to, I can't protect everyone, especially if they don't get how overwhelming the threat is.
It is just much faster, cheaper, easy to explain and convincing to the public to wait for the Alacryans to attack and then respond, then be proactive and stop threats that no one ever knew existed.
Even thought we are heading for war, I can't tell everyone to prepare for it if they don't understand that it's coming. And they won't understand until they see it. And they'll see it with the burning houses and dead bodies of their friends and families.
In the short term, more will be lost from the poor protection in place, but more will be gained in the long term from the fear and agitation it'll create.
...
"That's a horrible way to think." I thought to myself as I felt a sense of shame and disgust wash over me. "I'm knowingly letting dozens if not hundreds of people become victims of Agrona's sick plan while I'm preparing a festival." I added, putting words on the absurdity of the situation.
Feeling uneasy, I leaned on a bit more on my arms to stabilize myself as I thought back to all I had seen and heard during the war, the destruction, the death, the people crying, the hatred, the names of all the soldiers of my battalion who didn't make it out, the smell of blood on my hands, the image of my parents hanged in the human capital, that scene of Arthur sacrificing himself to save me replaying right in front of me.
Suddenly feeling hand grab my shoulder, I jerked away in reflex before looking towards whomever touched me with my eyes wide open, my breaths quick and shallow, my legs glued in place, only for me to see Arthur's worried face.
-You look pale Tess, are you alright?" He asked as I stood in place while trying to assert my situation.
-Yeah, yeah." I let out between my quick breath as I glanced around, confirming that I was still in my office in Xyrus academy. "I-I just need to rest for a second." I answered in an unsure tone while haphazardly moving my trembling left hand back to grab onto my sit's arm.
