Dodging back to avoid the wave of debris being thrown my way, slicing a few with my sword, I kept most of my focus on Scythe Dragoth, who had been swinging his battleaxe like a maniac since we began our fight.
"Swinging might be too nice of a way to put it, since he generally just slammed as hard as he could in my general direction." I thought while landing on an elevated, invincible platform I had conjured.
Raising a giant tree from the ground to trap him with the layers of branch and roots, I hoped the spell would occupy him long enough for me to look around and tried to locate the remaining students in the area.
I was also secretly hoping to find someone I knew, especially Arthur, who I had been separated from while we were fighting the two Scythes. I wasn't far from having a heart attack every time I saw an injured student or dead body in the street while praying for it to not be one of my loved ones, while feeling a hint of guilt after getting relieved that someone else died or lost a leg.
-Looking away, huh?" Mused Dragoth as he leaped toward me, having escaped from my spell faster than I had expected, attacking me with the flat of his axe as if it was a hammer to smack me down.
Leaping back while using my powers to lower the platform I was standing on, I barely avoided the attack as the Vritra-blooded buffoon's weapon smacked against the invisible platform.
"I can't lose my focus." I scolded myself as I repositioned. "The one good news is that no other Scythe has come to fight me." I thought about trying to stay positive before realizing that it was rather weird for no other opponent to have shown up.
"If they really wanted to kill me, shouldn't they have prioritized the main target?" I asked myself, knowing that I was by far the strongest opponent they would have to face during their operation.
Not having too much time to think about this, I weaved between the ruthless barrage of attacks while trying to find a second to use my own attacks.
As I prepared a large fire javelin, I concluded that the reason only one of them was after me was either because they prioritized taking care of the lesser threats first before all converging on me or because they explicitly wanted to keep me alive.
Firing my spell, I had to hold back at the last moment after seeing two students hiding in a building directly behind Dragoth.
Knowing that I could accidentally hit the students if I used a large-scale attack, I had kept using mid-scale attacks, just like this fire projectile, which unfortunately made it far too easy for him to avoid it.
The obvious answer would have been to go to a place without any students, like the nearby forest, especially since the trees would slow Dragoth down significantly due to his size, or high in the sky, but that horned fucker knew that perfectly well.
Last time I tried to lure him out of the Academy grounds, he immediately spun back around, rushed to the nearest students he could find, and sliced them in half with a single strike.
If I wanted to protect the students, I had to keep close to be able to quickly punish him if he went to attack them, but keeping so close to such a bulky opponent whose main tactic was thrashing everything he laid his hands on wasn't especially effective.
Running out of ideas on how to fight Dragoth effectively, I tried to overwhelm him with waves of stone and ice needles, boosted by wind and covered in a layer of electricity, aiming for his shoulders and knees.
Smirking, the huge horned figure took the attack head-on and ran straight at me while swinging his axe around violently, sending most of the projectiles flying off to the side while the ones that hit missed their intended target and didn't even leave a scratch on his body.
