Travis' POV
It had been a long day. The game had been brutal—one of those physically exhausting matches that left players limping to the locker room, aching from head to toe. Every muscle in my body screamed in protest as i walked back into the hotel room, the soreness from the hits I'd taken throughout the night overwhelming me. My face was tight with exhaustion, and O winced with every step.
Taylor, who had been sitting on the bed waiting for me, immediately noticed my discomfort. She had been at the game, cheering me on from the stands like always, but she could tell by the way I was moving now that I'd been hurt more than I'd let on. She put down the book she'd been pretending to read and stood up, already making her way over to me.
"Hey," she said softly, reaching out to touch my arm. "You alright?"
I let out a long breath, shrugging one shoulder. "Yeah, babe, just... rough game. My body's killing me and even with all the padding it was fucking freezing out there."
Taylor's POV
I frowned my heart sinking at the sight of him looking so worn out. He was always the strong one, the one taking care of me, but tonight, he was the one who needed looking after. "Come on, sit down," I said, guiding him over to the bed. "Let me help."
He grumbled a little in protest, trying to act like it wasn't a big deal, but his body wasn't cooperating. Every movement seemed to make him wince, and as he sank down onto the edge of the bed, he let out a deep groan.
I couldn't help but smile, though she tried to keep it sympathetic. "You sound like an old man," I teased, but still with warmth in my voice.
"Feel like one," he muttered, rubbing his shoulder. He glanced up at me, his eyes softening. "You don't have to fuss over me. I'll be fine."
"Uh-huh," I said casually, not believing him for a second. I moved to the bathroom and grabbed a towel, running it under warm water. When I returned, I knelt down in front of him, pressing the warm cloth to the back of his neck, wiping away the sweat and grime from the game.
Travis sighed in relief, his shoulders relaxing a little under my touch. "That feels good," he admitted, closing his eyes for a moment.
"I bet," I said cautiously, still keeping my voice gentle. I continued to clean him up, movements still slow and careful, like I was afraid of hurting him more. "Where does it hurt the worst?"
"Everywhere," he grumbled, but then he motioned to his ribs. "Took a nasty hit there. Feels like someone ran me over with a truck."
I winced at the thought. I had obviously seen him take hard hits before, but every time, it made my stomach flip. I couldn't help but worry, as even though I knew he was tough, knew he could handle it. "I'll get you some ice," I said, getting up to grab an ice pack from the mini fridge.
As I pressed the ice pack gently to his ribs, he let out a sharp breath, flinching slightly. "Sorry," I murmured, my voice soft.
"Nah, it's okay," he said, his hand covering mine for a second, squeezing lightly to let me know it was fine. "Just sore."
We sat in silence for a few minutes, me holding the ice pack in place while Travis leaned back against the headboard, his eyes closed. The room was quiet except for the soft hum of the air conditioner, and as I watched him, my heart swelled with a mix of love and concern. He was always so strong, always the one charging forward no matter what. But right now, he looked vulnerable, and it made me want to wrap him up in my arms and protect him from everything.
"You really don't have to do all this, you know," he said after a while, his voice low and a little hoarse.
I smiled softly. "I know. But I want to. You always take care of me, so it's my turn."
He opened his eyes, looking at me with a soft expression that made my heart skip a beat. "You're amazing, you know that?"
I blushed, brushing it off with a little shrug. "Yeah, well, don't get used to it. You're back to being the tough guy tomorrow."
Travis chuckled, wincing slightly as the movement pulled at his sore muscles. "Deal."
Once the ice pack had done its job, I helped him change into more comfortable clothes. I could tell he was in pain from the way he moved stiffly, every motion careful and deliberate. When he finally settled into bed, I pulled the blankets up around him, making sure he was as comfortable as possible.
"Can I get you anything else?" I asked, sitting down beside him.
He shook his head, reaching out to take my hand. "Nah. Just you."
I smiled, leaning down to kiss his forehead. "You've got me."
As I started to pull away, he tugged me a little closer, pulling me down beside him. "Stay with me?" he murmured, his voice a little drowsy.
I laughed softly, settling down next to him under the covers. "I wasn't planning on going anywhere."
He wrapped an arm around me, pulling me against his chest. Despite his aches and pains, he held me close, his grip gentle but firm. "Good," he muttered, his eyes already drifting shut. "'Cause you're the best medicine I've got."
I felt her heart melt at his words, and I snuggled closer, resting my head on his chest. I could hear the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath my ear, and for a moment, everything felt right. He might be the one on the field, taking the hits, but here, in this quiet hotel room, it was my turn to be the strong one.
As Travis's breathing slowed, his body finally relaxing into sleep, I smiled to myself. I pressed a soft kiss to his chest, whispering, "I love you," even though I knew he was already out cold.
But it didn't matter. I knew he felt it.
And tonight, that was all I needed.
