The next day, Akshita and I made our way to the orphanage with all the necessary documents. I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation. We were one step closer to officially making Advika a part of our family.
As we entered the familiar gates, I glanced at Akshita and saw the hopeful expression on her face. It only made me more determined. I knew there could still be hurdles, but I was confident that we could navigate the process smoothly and adopt Advika without any issues.
It wasn't just about the paperwork or legalities. It was about giving Advika the home she deserved, a place where she would be loved unconditionally. And seeing Akshita's determination, I knew we were ready for whatever came our way.
I took a deep breath as we walked through the hallways of the orphanage, faint echoes of children's laughter filling the air. Akshita squeezed my hand gently, her eyes scanning the surroundings as if soaking in every little detail. I could see the way her gaze softened whenever she spotted a child running past us or giggling in the distance.
"Ready?" I asked softly, knowing this was a big step for her too.
She nodded, smiling up at me. "More than ready."
We approached the office where Aunt Mary waited, her welcoming smile putting us at ease. I handed over the stack of documents, watching as she skimmed through them.
The atmosphere was a mix of formality and warmth, but the thought of Advika being a permanent part of our lives made everything worthwhile.
"Everything looks in order," Aunt Mary said with a reassuring nod. "The next step is to schedule the trial period, but given how well she is already attached to you both, I think we can expedite that."
Akshita's grip tightened on my hand, her excitement barely contained. I couldn't help but smile. We were almost there. Almost a family.
"Where is advika?"
I looked on as aunt Mary's expression fell. I grew tense.
"Is she okay?" I blurted out quickly.
"She caught a fever, last night she cried after you both left." I closed my eyes in pain and sighed. Shouldn't have left.
"Can I see her please?"
"Of course you can, she's in her room." I stood up and made my way over to her room. Akshita followed behind me.
I slowly walked into her room, careful not to make a sound. There she was, curled up in a small ball, clutching her pink teddy bear close to her chest. Her tiny frame seemed even smaller under the blanket, and I could see the tracks of dried tears on her cheeks. My heart clenched at the sight.
Moving quietly, I sat down on the edge of her bed and brushed my fingers gently through her hair. Akshita stood beside me, concerned etched on her face as she watched.
