As Above, So Below

SHE RAN her thumb across the envelope, a slight age to the paper she could feel.  It had been almost a year since she had gotten the letter, and she was still scared to open the contents.  Coming up on the anniversary of Shannon's death was hitting her.

It was harder with her now being with Eddie, the both of them having the guilt, him more than her. Josie adjusted herself in her seat, Alex driving them to the fire station with their usual donuts.

"Have you heard back from your brother?" Alex wondered, Josie shook her head.  "He is getting the tickets soon, he should be emailing me when they are ready." She says.

"It's cool that you are going back to Miami," Levi spoke up, leaning his head into the cab. "Are you excited?" He pondered.

"It's a toss-up." She deadpanned.  "How long has it been since you were last there?" He asked. Josie blinked slowly.

"Since 2013, we left in what early January?" Josie looked to Alex for the correct number.  "Yeah, because I talked to my mum at Christmas about moving in with her." She says.

"You two drove all the way to LA?" He wondered, then nodded. Josie smiled nostalgic, remembering the young twenty-somethings they were, with nothing but a beat-up Subaru and a failed dream.

"We did, it was definitely an experience, I had a whole budget planned and sometimes we didn't stay in the hotels we slept in the car." Josie chuckled.

"I never thought about it till now, none of us are really from here, like born and raised," Levi says, she nods.  "I'm New York, you two Flordia and Australia." He pointed out.

"Actually I was raised in LA, I just wasn't born here." Alex corrected him.  "Dont you think they get annoyed at all the transplants that come through?" He wondered.

"Probably, this is a big city though I don't think people will notice if one person leaves it," Josie says to him. His eyes darted to her lap seeing the envelope.

"What is that?" He asked. She stammered for a moment.  "It's a letter." She tells him, and he raises a brow.

"From who?" Levi wondered, she took a deep breath.  "From Shannon." She answered.

"Shannon like, Shannon Diaz?" He phrased, and she nodded her head.  "She gave It to me the day before she died." She explained.

"Have you read it?" Levi curiously asked, she shook her head.  "I'm too scared, I don't know what she wrote." She says.

"I mean it could be a letter of her asking me to stay away from Eddie, and I would have to respect the dead." She declared.  "Then why did you bring it if you're too scared to read it?" Alex wondered.

"I don't know I just have this feeling....like something about today is making me uneasy." Josie professed, rubbing her side.  "Cramps?" Alex suggested.
