The plane I was on had just landed, and now that I'm here in the Philippines, I have to adjust to a whole new environment again. Argh! Why did I even have to come back here? Life in the States with my grandparents was perfectly fine. Ugh!
I was on my way out of the airport when I saw a banner with my full name written on it. That must mean they're the one picking me up.
" Ashiana Messeah Malva-Altravo"
"What? My full name? Seriously?" I walked up to the guy holding the banner and told him to load my luggage into the car because I just wanted to go home and rest.
"Magandang hapon po, Maam!" An old man greeted me, his wrinkled skin clearly showing his age.
I simply nodded.
He opened the car door, and I immediately got in and rested. The entire trip had been exhausting, and if I hadn't been asked so persistently, I wouldn't have come home. I didn't really have much of a choice, anyway.
As we drove, I started feeling sleepy and decided to take a quick nap. The drive would take almost two more hours before we reached the house, and I could really feel the jetlag weighing me down. I probably looked completely haggard by now.
We hadn't even been driving for half an hour when I suddenly woke up. I noticed the car had stopped, and Manong was outside. I quickly asked, him "What's going on?"
"Maam nasiraan po tayo nag overheat po ang makina ng kotse nyo."
He answered his voice filled of concerned.
"What? What should we do now? Arghhh, this is so annoying!"
I quickly grabbed my phone to call Dad.
When he picked up, I immediately told him without any small talk.
"Dad, our car stopped, and the driver can't start the engine again! What should we do now?" I said, clearly frustrated.
"Seah, relax. I'll be right there. Just send me your location, and I'll be there as soon as possible," he replied.
"How can I? I don't even know where we are either."
"Just ask your driver, Iha," he said.
I glanced at Manong, who was still outside, trying to figure out what was wrong with the engine. With a sigh, I rolled down the window and called out to him. "Manong, where are we exactly? I need to send my dad the location."
He looked up at me, wiping sweat from his forehead. The he told me the location.
I quickly relayed the information to my dad, hoping he'd make it here soon.
The sky was getting dark, but my dad still wasn't here, and suddenly, I felt scared because I wasn't familiar with this place. I called my dad again, and he said he was on the way, so I needed to calm myself and not panic.
It was already 6:45 PM, but my dad still hadn't arrived. Manong driver tried to fix the car, but he failed, so we didn't have any choice but to wait until my dad arrived to pick us up from this creepy place.
Before my dad arrived, a guy stopped in front of my car and asked what happened.
"Manong, ano ang problema ng sasakyan?" he asked, his voice was firm.
Before the driver could answer, I cut him off.
"Isn't it obvious? We broke down!" I replied, my tone a bit bratty.
"Manong, ang sungit naman ng alaga n'yong dinosaur. Maganda sana, kaso may attitude," he said, looking at me with a direct stare before chuckling lightly.
