While my friends were happily watching the game, I decided to distract myself by scrolling through my phone. I hadn't been active lately because I was busy preparing for the school year. As soon as I opened my social media, tags and mentions flooded my notifications, but I didn't bother going through them one by one. Instead, I just kept scrolling aimlessly.
"Breaktime! Relax yourselves, players." I heard the coach announce.
I looked up briefly, and i saw Matteo glanced in our direction. Out of reflex, I covered my face with my bag. Irene, on the other hand, was practically melting from excitement.
"G-girls, did you see that? He looked this way! Ackkkk!!!" Irene exclaimed, almost fainting from giddiness.
"Irene, cut it out with your over-the-top fangirling," Frea scolded her, pinching her side.
"Ouch! Frea, come on! What's wrong with admiring him? I mean, who wouldn't like Captain Matteo?" Irene defended herself.
"Even so, calm yourself down. You looked like you were about to faint from excitement. HAHAHAHA!" Frea teased.
I glanced over at Matteo. He was talking to some of his teammates and even leaned in to whisper something to one of them. What could he possibly be saying? Ugh, Seah, stop overthinking things again!
"Seah, I'll head out now. My ride's already here," Frea said, pulling me out of my thoughts.
"I'll go with you, Frea. Let's leave together."
"Alright! Let's go!"
"Irene, we're heading out now. Our rides are here. Byeee!" I told her as we prepared to leave.
"It's still so early! But fine, take care, you two. Byeee!" Irene waved at us.
Frea and I started walking out of the field. I wondered if my ride was already outside too. Sigh, oh well, I'd rather wait outside than stay any longer in the field. Besides, I wasn't in the mood to deal with all the noise inside. Waiting out here felt like the better choice.
We had already stepped out of Mertyle, and, as I expected, Manong Gilbert wasn't here yet. Late again-hayst.
"Seah, still no ride? Just come with us. We can drop you off," Frea offered.
"No need, Frea. Manong Gilbert should be here soon. But thank you."
"Alright, if you say so. Byeee! Take care, okay?"
"Byeee! You too!"
After Frea's car drove off, I sat down at the school's waiting area.
"Ugh, Manong is taking too long. This is so boring. I can't just sit here and wait. Might as well go for a walk. Staying here in this dull spot will drive me crazy," I muttered to myself.
As I strolled along, I noticed a street food stall by the roadside. I'd been craving street food for quite some time, so I didn't think twice about stopping.
"Manong, fishball po!"
"Ilan?"
"Just one stick, po!"
The vendor handed me a stick of fishballs, and I quickly took a bite. It was delicious! My followers weren't lying-this was worth trying. They were the reason I was indulging in this guilty pleasure right now. I ended up having two sticks of fishballs and a piece of orange ball.
"Is it good?"
I turned around, startled by the voice behind me. I had to check if they were actually talking to me.
"M-Matteo? W-why are you here? Don't you have practice back at the field?" I stammered, completely caught off guard.
"Well, I looked over to where you were earlier, but you were gone."
