As soon as Hagrid left, I could feel the weight of Severus's silence beside me. He sat back, fingers wrapped around his nearly empty coffee cup, his expression cool but unmistakably pointed. I knew that look well.
I settled back into my chair, meeting his gaze with a smirk. «Oh, don't look at me like that, Severus. Surely, you're not jealous are you?»
He arched a brow, his tone dismissive yet tinged with something sharper, «jealous? Hardly. I simply find it... interesting that you and Hagrid seem so... friendly».
I chuckled, unable to resist teasing him, «he's not so terrible, you know. In fact, he was rather good company back then — quite warm, and far less inclined to scowl at me over a coffee».
Severus's jaw tightened just slightly, and I could see the hint of irritation flicker behind his eyes. «Company? And here I was thinking Leonie Lovegood preferred solitude and skipping classes».
I shrugged then, while maintaining my teasing tone, «Hagrid had a way of listening without judgement. Unlike certain professors who preferred to remind me of my shortcomings every time I stepped into their classroom».
He scoffed, though there was a slight softening to his expression. «And you confided in... him?»
«Sometimes. If I needed to clear my head. He was often around when I was down at the—»
«Lake», he finished my sentence, nodding his head as if he could see it play out in his mind.
The corners of my lips curled into a smile, «yes. So you remember».
His gaze darkened just a little, «I might be older than Sybill, but I am yet to lose my memory, doll».
A snort ran through my nose as I clamped my mouth shut to stop myself from giggling. This, apparently, brought a faint smile upon his face.
«That is not what I meant», I said as I recovered, sliding my hand across the table onto his, «you must have had a gazillion students, so why would I expect you to notice everyth-»
He cleared his throat, «after your ridiculous proposal regarding our agreement, you were not a... student to me any longer. Like you clearly should not even have been, if we are being political correct».
I nodded, «you're right. But it was fine. No one found out».
The tension in his shoulders was quite evident as he leaned back into his seat. Simultaneously he slipped his hand from under mine and went to press both of his into his coat's pockets.
«What? Did they?», I asked, rushing my hand back into my lap, stressfully glancing around the room in the search of curious eyes. Wondering if I should have been even more worried than I'd given myself time to be.
«No», he drawled as I could sense his reluctance in saying whatever was coming next, «however... as much as I would have never considered anyone of my ex-colleagues my preferred company... I would remiss to underestimate their... perceptiveness», Snape said, flaring his nostrils slightly while his gaze travelled across the table, avoiding mine. «They may lack my particular methods, but they are hardly fools», he continued, finally looking at me, «even silly little Filius seemed aware something was... amiss».
