For a very short moment I felt like I could not breathe. Like all life drained from me. From the very tips of my fingers. Dripping like rain. The sensation was incredibly hard to describe, but it lasted for such a short time I nearly forgot what it felt like before it had even begun.
The next thing I felt was Pike pulling my arm, and when my vision restored properly I noticed him grinning.
«What the hell?», I hissed and rubbed my face, uncertain whether I'd just walked through a spiderweb or an intense cloud of smoke.
He let out a chortle and pointed behind me. Sure enough, I'd just strolled straight through a ghost. I could hear it muttering profanities as it floated down the hall. Undoubtedly offended by my rude and absentminded intrusion.
«Can you guys please hurry?», Pansy exclaimed. She had darted quite far ahead of us, her facial expression still heavy with fear.
Apparently the chocolate liqueur had been quite a lot stronger than Pike had admitted to, and so I felt my mind going hazy and my walking abilities weakening. «Where the hell did you buy that drink?», I whispered to him as he pulled me along with him.
Pike shrugged his shoulders and smiled back at me, «I didn't. Got it from Filch's office».
My eyes widened, but I couldn't help but flash a grin as I shook my head in disbelief. And as a giggle erupted from me, Pansy stopped in her tracks and waved her hands angrily.
«This is not funny guys, he is hurt», she stated, rather heartbreakingly actually, as her voice hitched when her eyes seemed to water.
Pike and I looked at each other and realised it was time to put our focus where it needed be. Ignoring my rising intoxication, on the other hand, wasn't exactly easy. It was quite impossible, in fact.
Approaching the infirmary a few stumbles, tumbles and muffled giggles later, Pike and I came to an abrupt halt.
«Shit», Pike hissed under his breath as he nearly knocked me over. I steadied myself by pressing my palm against the wall and patted down my skirt, making sure it still sat where it should. My mind racing with irrational fears.
«Oh», I breathed, noticing the same he did.
Dumbledore.
He was speaking to Madam Pomfrey outside the closed doors, gesturing with his hands, but speaking calmly. It even seemed as if he didn't want anyone to hear, although they were both rather visible where they stood. It confused me to say the least, though I wasn't sure I trusted my own intuition at that point.
Pansy went towards them with no issue whatsoever, but Pike and I both figured the same thing — we could not meet with the headmaster in our state. And so we turned around to head back, hoping Pansy wouldn't kill us for it.
It soon came to my attention that we were stuck between a rock and a hard place. For we were just about to be face to face with Professor Snape and Lucius Malfoy, as they came storming towards us — or rather, towards the infirmary. They seemed determined by the way they walked, almost racing each other. But Snape had longer legs and strode fairly fast. His face was drawn into his usual poker face, but I could tell he was vexed, and so I wondered what was on his mind.
Pike hissed stuff in my ear. I figured they were comments about our horrifying situation, but all I could focus on was the eye contact I had suddenly obtained.
