The castle emerged like a memory through the mist, sending a mix of feelings ricocheting through me.

It had been raining on and off the whole train ride, the windows streaked in silver. Now the sky hung low and heavy as we rounded the last bend in the path, the gates of Hogwarts' grounds just ahead.

Snape and I had occupied our own little train compartment, enjoying each other's presence, chatting and reminiscing. That was until my stomach had growled, and although I had insisted I was going to be fine — he had popped off to find me a snack from the train trolley that had passed us ages ago, leaving me looking out the window, sitting by myself.

When the compartment door slid open a few minutes later I was surprised to see it wasn't him, but another familiar face.

«Leonie?»

I'd turned my head, blinking once before smiling in response. «Professor Lupin, hi,»

He smiled softly, the lines around his eyes had deepened since I'd last seen him. His voice was still calm and gentle. «No professor, please, just Remus now. May I?»

I nodded, and he stepped inside, sitting across from me, explaining how he had just gone to the loo and noticed me on his way back.

«I almost did not recognise you,» he said, «and you're early. That is new.» Lupin let out a soft chuckle while I fidgeted with my nails.

«I suppose,» I laughed, «I came for-»

«I heard you're the CEO of a successful muggle company in London, is that true?», he suddenly asked, clearly eager and curious.

I shrugged and looked out the window, before offering a smile, «crazy what a tiny touch of magic can do, huh?» I leaned a little closer, «but don't tell anyone I said that.»

Lupin smiled, «we all need a little magic. It suits you, I think. The independence. Good job.»

The sound of the door sliding open again startled me lightly. We both turned that way, seeing Snape stood in the doorway with two paper-wrapped parcels and a look on his face that was — well, if I had to label it — distinctly territorial.

His eyes flicked from me to Lupin, then back again. He then stepped inside with the slow precision of someone who worked hard not to say something rude. «Remus.»

He smiled, «Severus,» and then shifted in his seat, just a little closer to the window, «I'm surprised to see you! Join us.»

Snape wasn't even able to move an inch before Lupin continued.

«You remember Leonie? Leonie Lovegood? She was one of yours! We were just-»

His. Definitely his.

«I remember,» Snape said flatly.

Lupin then glanced back to me, «I was just telling her she's done well for herself. CEO and everything; just brilliant! You should be proud.»

I caught the flex in Snape's jaw. «Yes,» he drawled, «she tends to exceed expectations.»

«Well, she certainly exceeded mine. Merlin, I remember in your third year-»
