I had gone to work that day, and when I had returned home Luna was still there. The kitchen was like a war zone.
Tarts, pies and cakes were all lined up on the counter, and her face had streaks of flour from one end to the other.
The chaos made me realise there must have been a reason for her sudden reappearance into my life. But I was not going to lie to myself and blame those months apart on her. No, I had flipped once — when she almost revealed our world to Martin.
«... Luna? Why are you here?», I asked, placing my bag on one of my kitchen chairs.
She spun around, a puff of flour dancing in the air as she did. Her usual dreamy expression was intact, though there was a flicker of something underneath it — something different. Urgent, maybe.
«Oh, Leonie! You're back. Perfect timing. I have made a treacle tart too... well, six treacle tarts, but one of them should be edible, I think», she said and wiped her hands on her skirt, leaving smudges of butter and flour across the already messy fabric.
«Luna», I repeated, sharper this time, «why are you here?»
Her smile faltered for a moment, but she shrugged, as if the question had a simple answer. «I missed you», she said.
I folded my arms, leaning against the counter. «You have missed me before, but that did not involve... whatever this is», I said and pointed to the chaotic setup in my kitchen.
She hesitated, glancing down at the cakes as if they might somehow offer her guidance. Then, she sighed, looking up at me with those wide, unblinking eyes. «It's... father».
I rolled my eyes and waved my hand dismissively, «of course. I should have known. Just tell him... maybe I'll drop by... next year, hm?»
«It's not that... it's», Luna hesitated again.
I narrowed my eyes. Luna hesitating was never a good sign, and she had already done it twice. «Spit it out, Luna», I said, «what is it?»
She clasped her flour-covered hands together, avoiding my gaze for once, «he's... not well, Leonie».
My stomach dropped. «What do you mean? Did something happen?»
«He had an accident», she said quietly. «A bad one. He's in St. Mungo's».
I froze, her words echoing in my ears. St. Mungo's. I had not set foot there since... well, since mum. My chest tightened, and for a moment I couldn't breathe. I desperately wanted to feel Snape's safe presence. A supportive hand on my back.
«What kind of accident?», I asked. My voice came out sharper than I had intended, but I did not care.
Luna's gaze flickered to me, her usual whimsical demeanor replaced by something more serious. «He was working with a new charm, something for The Quibbler. Something went wrong. He's fine... physically. But his memory is affected. He keeps asking for you», she explained.
I swallowed hard, trying to push down the knot in my throat.
«His memory?», I asked, the words sounding foreign as they left my mouth. Confusion about to overtake me.
Luna bit her lip, «he keeps forgetting things. Important things. He'll ask where I have been or when you're coming home. And... well, there is something off. The healers are suggesting the charm backfired, but I'm not sure. I... need you, Leonie».
The unease in her voice made my heart race. I was beginning to feel like I was reliving the worst memory of my life.
«Why do they have to be so stupid», I hissed unexpectedly, feeling overcome by emotions, «why couldn't they just be normal, huh?»
