The room had the kind of heavy stillness that only comes when the weight of unsolved cases hangs in the air. Papers were scattered across the desk like fallen leaves, their edges curling under the dim glow of the desk lamp. The cluttered bulletin board on the far wall was covered in pinned photos, sketches, and notes—a chaotic roadmap of the investigation. The faint scent of old coffee lingered in the air, a silent witness to the long hours that had been spent here.

Jungkook sat slumped in the worn-out leather chair, his fingers absentmindedly tapping against the edge of the desk. His dark eyes were distant, unfocused as they skimmed over the files scattered before him. Though he was not part of the police force, his presence in this office wasn’t an anomaly. The case involved his brother, and he was here not just as family but as someone trusted—trusted by the police commissioner, Eunwoo, his best friend.

Across from Jungkook, Eunwoo stood, his tall frame casting a long shadow over the scattered documents. His face was etched with tension, brows furrowed as he leafed through the latest report. The subtle glow of the setting sun filtered through the half-closed blinds, casting striped patterns on the floor like prison bars, trapping them both in the suffocating anxiety of the moment.

To the side, another officer was perched on the edge of the desk, flipping through a thick file, but his presence was more background noise compared to the silent conversation happening between Jungkook and Eunwoo. There was an unspoken understanding between the two; despite Jungkook’s detachment from the police, this case felt personal, and the stakes couldn’t have been higher.

Jungkook’s eyes finally landed on Eunwoo, and he leaned forward slightly, the chair creaking under his weight. His voice broke the silence, low and steady. “How much longer?”

Eunwoo didn’t immediately respond, his gaze still focused on the papers in his hand. He knew Jungkook wasn’t asking about time. The question ran deeper.

Jungkook sighed heavily as he glanced at Eunwoo, frustration etched across his face. A whole month had passed, and they still hadn’t uncovered a single strand of evidence related to Jeongguk's killer.

"Eunwoo, goddamn. How can you still not find anything?" Jungkook's voice was tinged with exasperation.

"I'm trying, okay? My team is doing everything we can, but it feels like we’re searching for something that doesn’t even exist," Eunwoo replied, his own frustration bubbling beneath the surface. The pressure of the case weighed heavily on him; he had always prided himself on being the best.

"Maybe our path is wrong," Jungkook muttered, his brow furrowing as he contemplated their approach. Eunwoo turned to look at him, intrigued.
