Avery arrived at the Wreck early the next day, the sun barely climbing over the horizon, casting a soft golden light across the island. It was going to be a long day, but when Kie told her she had to prepare for her parents' anniversary party, Avery had jumped at the opportunity. An entire day of running around, doing tasks and decorating for a party? The perfect distraction.

She didn't have time to dwell on anything else, even if she had mixed feelings about the party itself—Kooks, crowds, and shallow conversations weren't exactly her idea of fun. But she could push those thoughts aside for now. As she sped down the road with the car her father had reluctantly agreed to let her borrow, the air warm and slightly breezy, she focused on the errands at hand, filling her mind with lists of groceries and decorations instead of anything else.

Soon, a text from Kie buzzed on her phone, the message simple but urgent: "Meet me at the back of the Wreck. Girl talk. It's important."

Avery frowned as she read it. She'd just seen Kie no more than half an hour ago, so what could've possibly happened in such a short time? Still, she didn't press Kie through a text, trusting she'd get the answer soon enough.

When she arrived at the back of the Wreck, she spotted Kie and Sarah sitting against the wall, talking quietly. The familiar scents of freshly baked bread and sizzling food filled the air, mixing with the light breeze, making the moment feel almost surreal. It wasn't the usual hustle of the restaurant—it was quieter here, the calm before the storm of partygoers later in the evening.

Avery's heart rate quickened as she approached. Something was off. Sarah? Her mind raced. "Sarah, are you okay?" Avery asked, her voice tight as she bent down next to her friend. Her arms instinctively went around Sarah, pulling the blonde close. "I'm so sorry for my parents. Did you figure out a place to stay?"

Sarah looked up, her eyes flickering with uncertainty before she invited Avery to sit beside her. There was a hesitation in her voice, a tension that had Avery's stomach knotting. "Yeah, about that..." Sarah trailed off before finally blurting out where she had stayed.

Avery blinked rapidly, trying to process the words. "You and Topper? What happened?" Kie, sitting quietly next to them, seemed just as curious, and Avery suddenly realized that this was the reason for the "girl talk."

"It's actually so embarrassing," Sarah admitted, her voice laced with a soft chuckle, as though she was trying to defuse the awkwardness. "He caught me slugging beer at the Tiki Bar."

Avery's mouth dropped open in disbelief, while Kie laughed, shaking her head. "You weren't."

"Yeah. Shot drinking," Sarah added, as if that made the situation even more outrageous.

Kie took a deep inhale, the teasing smile on her lips faltering as she turned away. "I'm not judging."

"I wouldn't blame you if you were." Sarah's words came out with a halfhearted laugh, and there was a vulnerable edge to it that made Avery's chest tighten.
