As Felix wandered through the manor's dimly lit corridors, the cool silence of the night enveloped him, his footsteps soft but deliberate. His hands clasped behind his back, he maintained his usual composed demeanor, though his mind was occupied with thoughts of Claude's whereabouts.
'His Majesty wasn't in the office, and I haven't seen him since earlier in the evening. Could he have retired to his bedroom?' Felix mused, the sense of duty pulling him toward Claude's chambers.
It was his responsibility as the emperor's personal guard to be vigilant, and after the grand ball, he had hoped to ask how the evening had unfolded.
The manor was still, the only sound being the faint echo of his steps against the polished floor. As the lateness of the hour weighed on him, a yawn escaped his lips.
'I should go to sleep after this... the knights are already posted around the palace. There's no need to stay up longer.'
Finally, Felix reached the large, ornate doors of Claude's chamber. His hand rose, poised to knock, but he paused abruptly, his ears catching the subtle rustling of bedsheets from within. His brow furrowed in mild concern, curiosity creeping in.
'What could be going on inside at this hour?'
In an attempt to make sense of the sounds, Felix leaned in closer, pressing his ear lightly against the door.
Muffled noises floated through the thick wood, and his eyes widened as realization dawned on him. His face flushed crimson as he pulled away quickly, his heartbeat skipping in embarrassment and fluster.
'Did I hear that correctly? Is this really happening...?!' The thought left him even more bewildered, and his expression, now a mix of shock and disbelief, betrayed his usual stoic composure.
Feeling the heat rise to his cheeks, Felix decided to make a hasty retreat, turning on his heel and walking briskly away from the door.
His gaze remained fixed on the floor as he absentmindedly scratched the back of his neck, his flustered state making him mumble under his breath, "It's definitely time for me to sleep instead..."
With that, Felix hurried down the corridor, hoping to erase the vivid embarrassment that now plagued him.
