That night, Taylor couldn't sleep. She tossed and turned in bed, her thoughts a chaotic mess. This newfound realization—that she had fallen for Travis—was both exhilarating and terrifying. Travis had started out as her patient, then became her friend—bestie, as he liked to say—and now, now, he was something more. But what exactly? What did she want him to be? And did he feel the same?
Her mind raced, swirling with endless questions.
Does he feel the same way? What if this ruins our friendship? Should I tell him how I feel? She groaned inwardly. What if I tell him and he doesn't feel the same? What if I lose him?Grabbing a pillow, she pressed it over her face and let out a frustrated yell. "Ugh! I hate this!"
But did she? Did she really hate the way he made her feel—how just the thought of him gave her butterflies? She wasn't sure if it was the unknown or her own feelings that scared her more.
She couldn't handle the whirlwind of emotions any longer. She needed advice. And fast. Despite how mad she had been at her friends recently—they did call her out on her feelings—they were still her family. She needed to talk to someone, and there was only one person she trusted enough to call right now.
She grabbed her phone from the nightstand and scrolled to Blake's number. It was way past midnight, but she couldn't wait. She dialed the number.
After a few rings, a groggy voice answered, "Tay? It's like, two in the morning." Blake's tone was a mix of sleepiness and concern.
Taylor winced, feeling guilty for waking her up. "I know, I'm sorry," she whispered, "but I can't sleep, and I... I needed to talk."
She could hear some rustling on the other end, followed by more shuffling, probably Blake getting out of bed so she didn't wake up Ryan. There was a brief pause before Blake switched to a video call, her face half lit by a dim bedside lamp.
Blake rubbed her eyes, still half-asleep. "Why can't you sleep?" she asked, her voice a bit more alert now.
Taylor hesitated, biting her lip. "Thinking."
Blake raised an eyebrow. "Thinking?"
Taylor sighed. "Overthinking."
Blake gave her a pointed look, clearly not in the mood for vague answers. "Taylor Alison Swift, it's the middle of the night. Stop beating around the bush and just say it."
Taylor huffed, partly annoyed, partly relieved. "Okay, okay! I'll tell you." She paused, gathering her thoughts. "You guys were right."
Blake, still groggy, yawned. "Right about what? We're right about a lot of things."
Taylor rolled her eyes. "About me... liking him."
Blake's eyes narrowed as she processed the words. "Him? Oh, you mean Travis. Tay, we figured that out months ago."
Taylor's mouth dropped open. "Wait, what?"
Blake let out a small laugh, shaking her head. "Tay, you can fool yourself all you want, but not us. We've known you for years. We could tell you were starting to feel something for him. Little by little, these past few months... we've seen the old you come back, and honestly? We figured Travis had something to do with that."
Taylor blinked, stunned. "You... you really think so?"
Blake gave her a knowing smile. "You've been happier, lighter. It's like you've come alive again. And we've seen the way you talk about him. The way you light up when he's around."
Taylor fell silent for a moment, her fingers absentmindedly playing with the edge of her duvet. "I guess... I didn't realize it myself until recently."
Blake's voice softened. "So... do you just like him?"
Taylor felt her heart flutter at the mere thought of him. She exhaled, feeling the weight of her emotions pressing against her chest. "I don't know," she muttered, not quite meeting Blake's eyes.
Blake tilted her head, watching her carefully. "Tay," she said, dragging out the word playfully, "you do know. You just don't want to say it."
Taylor sighed deeply, her voice barely a whisper. "What if I really don't know?"
Blake's voice was gentle but firm. "You wouldn't be calling me in the middle of the night if you didn't know."
Taylor stayed silent, chewing on her lip.
Blake leaned closer to the camera. "C'mon, Tay. Let's try again. Do you just like him?"
Taylor let out a shaky breath, her hand resting on her chest as if trying to calm the wild beating of her heart. "No," she whispered, the admission trembling on her lips. "I think... I think I might love him."
The words felt so heavy and light at the same time—like a burden she didn't know she was carrying, now released into the world. Saying it out loud made it feel real. Too real.
Blake smiled softly through the screen. "For what it's worth, I think he'd be good for you."
Taylor looked down, her lips curving into a faint smile. "Yeah?"
"Yeah," Blake replied, her voice full of certainty. "He's been good for you already."
Taylor bit her lip, her mind spinning. She loved him. She hadn't fully admitted it to herself before, but now that it was out in the open... it terrified her. What if Travis didn't feel the same way? What if this ruined everything?
Blake's voice broke through her thoughts. "Tay, you know I love you, right? And I only want what's best for you?"
Taylor nodded, her throat tightening.
Blake hesitated for a beat before continuing. "I think you should tell him how you feel."
Taylor's eyes widened, her heart pounding even faster. "Nope, nope, not happening," she said, shaking her head vehemently. "What if he doesn't feel the same way? I could lose him as a friend too. I can't— I can't risk that."
Blake sighed, but her voice remained gentle. "How would you know if you don't ask him?"
Taylor felt her stomach twist. "I don't know, Blake. I don't know if I'm ready to tell him. What if I just... mess everything up?"
Blake looked at her with understanding. "Take your time. You don't have to do anything right now. But you can't keep running from your feelings, Tay. Just... think about it."
Taylor nodded, her mind still racing. "Yeah... I need to think about it."
Blake smiled softly, her voice tender. "Alright, love. I'm here for you whenever you need me, okay?"
Taylor managed a small smile. "Thanks, Blake. Sorry for waking you."
Blake chuckled softly. "Don't worry about it. I'm always here for you, even at two in the morning."
"Goodnight, Blake. Love you."
"Love you too, Tay."
As Taylor hung up, she was left in the quiet darkness of her room, once again alone with her thoughts. The weight of her confession—both to herself and to Blake—lingered in the air, leaving her restless. She wasn't sure what her next move would be, but one thing was certain now: her feelings for Travis weren't just a passing crush. They were real, deep, and undeniable.
And that was the most terrifying part.
She lay back down, staring at the ceiling, the silence loud around her. Could she tell him? Should she? Her heart thudded in her chest, unsure of the answers.
Gradually, as the hours passed, exhaustion finally took over, and she drifted into a restless sleep—her dreams filled with thoughts of Travis, and all the what-ifs her heart wasn't ready to face just yet.
