The next morning, Taylor woke up a little earlier than usual, a spark of excitement running through her. It had been a long time since she'd made breakfast for two, and the thought of sharing a quiet morning with Travis made her feel giddy in a way she hadn't felt in ages.
After feeding her cats, she turned on some soft music, letting it fill the kitchen while she prepped. Deciding to keep things simple yet delicious, she whipped up a batch of waffles and pancakes, setting out a variety of toppings—chocolate syrup, maple syrup, honey, and butter—so Travis could choose whatever he liked. As the waffles sizzled in the iron, she filled the coffee maker and let it brew while she went upstairs to shower and change.
Dressed in a navy blue suit with a white T-shirt underneath, Taylor was just coming down the stairs when the doorbell rang. She felt a small thrill in her chest and hurried to answer it.
Opening the door, she found Travis standing there, a wide smile on his face and a bouquet of delicate dahlias in his hand.
"Hey there," he greeted, his voice soft.
"Hey, come in," she replied, stepping back to let him enter. As he stepped inside, he handed her the flowers, his eyes never leaving hers.
"For you, beautiful," he said, his voice full of a gentle affection that made her heart flutter.
"All gentlemanly," Taylor teased, trying to mask the way her cheeks warmed under his gaze.
Travis chuckled, giving her that charming grin. "I try my best."
Taylor chuckled in return, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "You sure do," she murmured, placing the bouquet in a vase before leading him into the kitchen.
As they were about to head into the kitchen, a series of meows and hisses erupted from the couch, pulling their attention to the feline chaos unfolding there. Taylor sighed, placing a hand on her hip as she watched Olivia and Benjamin rolling around in a full-on wrestling match, while Meredith sat on the windowsill, observing the spectacle with a bored, unamused expression.
"Great, you guys," Taylor muttered with a playful eye-roll. "First time my boyfriend comes over, and you start this. What is he gonna think?"
Travis burst out laughing, unable to hold it in, which made Taylor laugh too. She shook her head, clearly amused but exasperated.
Gesturing to each cat in turn, she began introducing them. "The one by the window is Meredith Grey, or just 'Mere,'" she said, nodding toward the disinterested onlooker.
Then she pointed at the pair locked in a furry scuffle. "And those two troublemakers are Olivia Benson—'Dibbles' for short—and Benjamin Button, or 'Benji'. " she said with a smirk.
Just as she spoke, Olivia managed to pin Benji down with surprising ease, causing Taylor to roll her eyes affectionately. "Guys, stop it! Stop, stop!"
She glanced back at Travis, shrugging with a grin. "Benji always starts it, and Olivia always finishes it. He's twice her size, but she's an amazing fighter."
Travis chuckled, shaking his head at the cats' antics. "I can see that. She's fierce."
Taylor laughed, clearly fond of her little fur family.
As they walked in, he inhaled deeply, the smell of warm waffles and coffee filling the room. "Well, whatever you made smells amazing," he said, settling onto a barstool at the kitchen island.
