(7th May)
(Taylor's Perspective)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taylor's flight landed, and as she stepped into the familiar air of Kansas City, a sense of calm settled over her. When she had left for Philly a few days ago, she had been overwhelmed—her mind buzzing with thoughts she couldn't quiet. But now, after spending time with her mom and grounding herself in that familiar comfort, it felt like she could breathe again. A certain weight had been lifted. Still, there was something unspoken hanging in the back of her mind, something she hadn't fully figured out yet, something... about Travis.
By the afternoon, Taylor was back home, unpacking her bags and getting ready to slip back into her routine. Just as she was about to curl up on the couch with a book, her phone buzzed with a group message from Selena, Blake, and Tree. They were meeting up at a cafe. Initially, Taylor thought to skip it. She had just returned, and she was tired. But then she found herself thinking, What the hell? Maybe I need to be around them. After all, her friends always had a way of making her feel grounded, no matter how chaotic her life felt.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taylor was running late, almost half an hour behind. When she finally entered the cozy cafe, she spotted her friends sitting by the window, chatting animatedly. She made her way over, tucking her hair behind her ear, feeling a little self-conscious.
Selena noticed her first. "Tay! I didn't think you were coming," she exclaimed, surprised but happy. Blake and Tree turned, equally surprised.
Taylor shrugged casually, dropping into the empty chair next to Tree. "Changed my mind." She offered a smile. She had just landed a few hours ago, and the exhaustion clung to her, but she didn't want to disappoint her friends by canceling.
"How was the flight?" Blake asked, sensing her fatigue.
Taylor waved her hand dismissively. "Long, but fine. I didn't really sleep much." She rubbed her temple lightly, trying to focus on the conversation. The lively chatter of the café buzzed around her, and for a moment, she regretted not staying home. She hadn't recharged like she thought she would.
The group launched into easy conversation—work, random gossip, plans for the weekend. But after a little while, just as she was starting to relax, the inevitable subject of Travis came up.
"So, how's Travis doing?" Blake asked casually, but there was a glint of curiosity in her eyes, as if she was fishing for something more.
Taylor's heart did a small flip at the mention of his name, but she brushed it off. "He's doing great, actually. He's made a lot of progress, and there's a good chance he might be back on the field next season," she said, unable to hide the warmth in her voice.
Blake and Tree exchanged knowing glances. Selena leaned in, her eyebrow raised, an amused smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "That's great to hear. But what about you and Travis?" she asked teasingly. "Do you like him?"
Taylor's cheeks flushed, the color rising quickly. She immediately went on the defensive, crossing her arms over her chest. "No, Sel, we're just friends." Her voice sounded a little too sharp, and the speed of her response only made it more suspicious. She could feel the heat rising in her cheeks, but she tried to shrug it off.
Tree smirked, popping a fry into her mouth as she leaned back in her chair. "Just friends, huh?" she echoed, her tone playfully accusatory.
Taylor's mouth dropped open as she glared at Tree. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Tree feigned innocence, raising her hands as if she'd done nothing wrong. "Nothing. I didn't say anything," she said, but the teasing smirk never left her face.
Frustrated, Taylor slapped her hands on the table, a light thud resonating, just loud enough for their small group. "Seriously, guys! What's with all of you thinking that I like Travis?" But even as she said it, a small voice in the back of her mind whispered, Because maybe you do.
Blake raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. "Right. And your face totally doesn't light up when you talk about him."
Taylor felt her cheeks burning now. "Guys, seriously," she huffed, leaning back in her chair. "Why do you all keep assuming that there's something more going on?"
Selena shrugged, her expression softening. "We're not assuming anything, Tay. We're just... observing."
Selena exchanged a look with Blake, and both of them took a sip of their drinks to hide their smiles. The silence that followed was thick with unspoken thoughts.
"Okay, okay," Blake said finally, handing Taylor the menu in an effort to defuse the tension. "We won't say anything else. What would you like to order?" Her voice was casual, but there was a knowing look in her eyes that told Taylor this wasn't over—not by a long shot.
Taylor felt the exhaustion weighing on her shoulders, pressing down harder. She rolled her eyes, frustrated by the whole thing. "You know what I'd like? Some peace." She pushed her chair back, standing abruptly. "I'm too tired for this." Grabbing her bag, she shook her head and left the table. As she walked out of the cafe, her thoughts were a mess. Why does everyone think I like him? Because maybe you do.
As the door closed behind her, the trio exchanged knowing looks. Selena sighed, her expression softening. "Why did you guys have to push her like that?"
Tree shrugged, unbothered. "I thought she would've realized by now. It's so obvious she's into him."
Blake leaned back in her chair, chuckling softly. "Give her time. She's been through a lot. She's probably not ready to admit it yet."
Selena nodded, her expression thoughtful. "Yeah, but did you see the way her face lit up when she talked about him? She's already in love with the guy. She just doesn't know it yet."
Tree grinned, leaning in conspiratorially. "Trust me, you haven't seen them together at the hospital. They're besties now, apparently." Her tone was light, but there was a hint of something deeper—something that made both Selena and Blake break into laughter.
Selena shook her head, smiling. "Well, I hope she figures it out soon."
Blake sighed. "She will. It's just a matter of time."

That evening, Taylor was back at home, sitting on her couch with a pizza and an old episode of Grey's Anatomy playing on the TV. She kept trying to push the day's conversation out of her mind, but it lingered. She wasn't ready to admit it out loud, but the truth was gnawing at the back of her mind—she cared about Travis more than she was willing to admit, even to herself.
She dozed off on the couch, exhaustion from the past few days finally catching up to her
