Miyeon leaned back on the stairs, feeling the chill of the metal railing press against her back. She had changed out of her sweaty practice clothes into comfortable white sweats and a soft blue t-shirt, her hair damp from a quick shower.

She glanced over at Jeonghan, who had followed her here and now sat close beside her. When she was walking back with Sohee, she'd felt the subtle weight of someone trailing behind them.

At first, she'd tried to ignore it, brushing it off as nothing. But the unease had only grown, and so she'd sent Sohee ahead, promising to meet her on the rooftop for lunch and a long-overdue conversation.

Turned out it was just Jeonghan who wanted to talk.

"You wanted to talk?", she asked, breaking the calm silence between them. At the sound of her voice, Jeonghan looked over, so fast their heads almost bumped, making her laugh a little despite the tension she felt.

They'd settled on the stairs just a floor above her changing room, a quiet spot since classes were suspended for the tournament. This floor of the building was dedicated to sports-table tennis, badminton, and chess rooms, all quiet and empty for now.

Jeonghan shifted to fully face her, drawing his legs up so they tangled together with hers on the big stairs they sat on, his gaze steady. "I just wanted to check if you're okay," he said softly, "You just got out of infirmary today and you're just going all out for practice now."

She laughed, a little surprised at how sincere he sounded. He was supposed to be at practice; he was the team captain, after all, and yet here he was, going out of his way just to make sure she was fine.

That made her heart beat a little faster and her cold hands feel a little warmer. It was a feeling she hadn't expected, a subtle shift that seemed to settle deep within her chest, comforting yet unsettling at the same time.

A feeling only he could make her feel.

"Didn't you already ask me that?", she teased, playing with the promise ring on her finger.

The ring was beautifully crafted, a delicate blend of rose gold for hers and silver for the others. Each ring was adorned with four tiny hearts, one inlaid with a unique color for each of them-Wonwoo, Daehan, her brother and herself-each heart symbolized the the four of them. It was a promise ring, one they'd all shared, a silent vow to always be there for one another.

A promise to stand together. A promise they all intended to keep. A promise that, somehow, had fallen apart.

Sunlight poured in through the window above them, casting a warm glow on both their faces. Jeonghan couldn't help but smile when she did, noticing how the light softened her sharp features, making her look radiant and carefree.
