"Why do we have to stand here waiting for them? It's not like we're getting bonus points for this," Miyeon grumbled, shifting impatiently as she stood beside Sohee.
The girl's and boy's basketball teams were arranged in two straight lines facing each other, creating a corridor-like space between them for their guests to walk through. It was Monday, and their instructors had instructed and demonstrated the proper way to welcome and greet their guests.
They looked like kindergarten kids.
The display seemed to be an ostentatious demonstration of their elite mannerism that they lacked and hospitality that they didn't want to offer.
Of course, Miyeon didn't want to and maybe the boy who stood facing her had the same thought.
"This is so fucking ridiculous," Jeonghan groaned as he stood between Joshua and Seungcheol and crossed his arms.
"Hey! Watch your language," Jeonghan rolled his eyes at Joshua's remark, "And we know that but let's just pretend we don't.", he nudged him with a look.
Jeonghan glanced over at Miyeon, who was standing directly in front of him. Miyeon stood with her head resting on Sohee's shoulder, while Sohee had her arm wrapped around Miyeon's shoulder.
He had this urge to tell Sohee to remove her arms from her shoulders but refrained.
"Getting tired already, Kim?", Jeonghan turned towards his left to see Mingyu standing beside Seungcheol, smirking teasingly at Miyeon.
Miyeon lifted her head from Sohee's shoulder just enough to give Mingyu a pointed look, "Yeah. I know better than to waste my time and energy on people like you," she said sharply, earning chuckles from her team.
"It happens when you're around such people.", he said, resting his arm on Seungcheol's shoulder.
She knew he was referring to Seungkwan, Dokyeom and Hoshi and she wanted to punch his face for that.
"That's why I tend to stay away from the likes of you but it's unavoidable at the moment.", she said with a knowing smirk, fully aware that she had the upper hand now as she stared at his flushed face.
Sohee chuckled at him, playfully patting Miyeon's arm as she proudly remarked, "Do you need more roasting when your friends already give you a hard time? That's pathetic." She couldn't help but let out a laugh.
Mingyu stood in shock as her words hit him like a personal attack. When he turned to look at his friends, they were all avoiding his gaze, but he could tell from their suppressed laughter that they were finding the situation amusing.
"I hate you all.", he grumbled irritated but then let out a chuckle at Sohee's quick response to back her teammate up after realizing that none of his friends would do the same at the moment as they were too busy laughing at his misery, "Touché, Han," he conceded, raising his hands in mock surrender with a roll of his eyes.
The playful banter between the two teams was a welcome distraction from the otherwise dull waiting.
As the time ticked by, the chatter between the two teams grew. Even the usually stoic Sohee joined in, sharing a story about their last big game.
After what felt like hours, the gym doors creaked open, and a few murmurs echoed in the hall. The first of the visiting teams had arrived. A group of boys and girls walked in, their uniforms pristine and expressions a mix of elegance and curiosity.
"Here we go," Joshua muttered under his breath, straightening up.
Coach Park, their basketball coach, clapped his hands to get everyone's attention. "Alright, teams! Let's show our guests some respect. Remember, we're hosting, and first impressions matter."
