"I was the good kid and it got me nothing."
It had been five days since they landed in Korea, and all Miyeon had done was laze around. The first day back was a blur of jet lag; all they could manage was sleeping, eating, and more sleeping. The maids had already unpacked their luggage, placing everything neatly in the mansion.
Their mansion was a peaceful retreat, an hour's drive from the city’s hustle and bustle. Her father had chosen this secluded location for the privacy it offered, away from the prying eyes.
But today was different. Today, she was finally going to meet her best friend, Nari. The anticipation made her both nervous and excited, so much so that she rushed through her breakfast.
"Eat slowly, Miya, or you'll choke," her mother warned gently.
"She's acting like an idiot," Mirae, her younger sister, teased, laughing at Miyeon’s eagerness.
Miyeon shot her a glare but slowed down her eating pace.
"Stop talking as if you're not one of us. If I'm an idiot, so are you," she retorted.
"Oh really? I'd rather be picked up from a trash can than be associated with you," Mirae quipped, sticking out her tongue.
Miyeon’s eyes widened, "You ungrateful piece of—"
"THAT'S ENOUGH," their mother interrupted with a sigh, looking at both girls. "What are you, six?"
"Yeah… six years younger than HER," Mirae sassed back, earning a light smack on the head from their mother. She pouted, rubbing the back of her head, sulking.
"So… you're finally going out to meet Nari. How do you feel?" her father asked, steering the conversation away from the brewing argument as he continued his breakfast.
"I'm nervous," Miyeon admitted, biting the inside of her cheek—a habit she picked up from someone she used to know.
"Nervous? Why?" her father asked, genuinely curious. He understood that meeting someone after years could be nerve-wracking, but Nari was her best friend.
"It's just that… we're meeting after so long. What if it’s awkward?" she sighed.
"It’s natural to feel that way," her mother reassured her. "But you’ve stayed in touch all these years. It might be a little awkward at first, but it will get better. Trust me." Her father nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, it gets better," Mirae echoed, mimicking their mother.
After breakfast, Miyeon got ready to leave. She chose beige sweatpants paired with a black button-up shirt. Once dressed, she headed to the car and started her drive to the café where she and Nari planned to meet.
The drive took about an hour. Upon arriving at the café, she parked her car and walked in. A soft bell chimed as she entered, signaling her arrival. She scanned the room for Nari’s familiar face but realized she hadn’t arrived yet. Finding a quiet corner, Miyeon settled down.
Her phone rang in her pocket. It was Nari.
"Hi!" Nari greeted enthusiastically.
"Hi!" Miyeon responded to her loud and cheerful best friend.
"Where are you?"
"I'm at the café. How long will you be?"
"I’ll be there in ten. Got stuck in traffic," Nari sighed.
"Okay… I'm waiting. Bye!"
Miyeon ended the call and looked out the window. Their drinks had already been served. To pass the time, she observed the people around her—old couples, students, office workers on break, and a young couple displaying affection openly.
Now, don’t get her wrong.
She wasn’t against public displays of affection, but she disliked people getting all lovey-dovey right in front of her. It was like she was allergic to love, even though she craved it herself.
What an irony.
By the time Nari arrived, Miyeon was engrossed in a novel she had brought along. She didn’t notice Nari’s arrival until she felt her presence beside her.
Her eyes met Nari’s, and she quickly stood up, enveloping her in a tight hug.
"I missed you so damn much, my bitch!" Nari mumbled against her shoulder, a sob escaping her lips.
Miyeon chuckled, trying to hide her own tears of happiness. "Six years… six damn years, and when we meet… you still call me that," she laughed. "I missed you too."
They finally pulled apart, each taking a moment to really look at the other. Nari had grown into a stunning young woman, her black hair sleek and shiny, her figure slender and elegant. Everything about her screamed perfection, and Miyeon couldn’t help but wonder how popular Nari must be.
Nari, in turn, took in Miyeon’s appearance. The years had treated her well.
Miyeon was tall and honey-skinned, with shoulder-length, slightly wavy black hair and a figure that many would envy. She had grown into a beautiful young woman.
"I already ordered us drinks," Miyeon said, pointing to the iced coffee in front of Nari.
Nari smiled and took a sip, eyeing Miyeon’s cappuccino. "Since when do you like cappuccino?"
"Only sometimes," Miyeon shrugged.
"So… how are you?" Nari asked. Despite the years apart, there was still an unspoken understanding between them. One glance, and they could sense each other’s feelings.
"I'm good. Just a bit tired," Miyeon sighed.
"Is he living with you now?" Nari asked, trying to read Miyeon’s expression. She was referring to Miyeon’s cousin.
"No. He’s still in China, finishing his studies. He didn’t want to leave them midway, but he’ll be here soon. It’s better for him to be with us than… there. He knows it too," Miyeon replied, her gaze hardening as she stared at the table.
"Miya, is everything okay now… you know?" Nari asked gently. She was concerned after hearing what Miyeon had been through and wanted to ensure things were better now.
"Yeah," Miyeon replied a bit too quickly.
It wasn’t that she didn’t want to talk about it with Nari, but she didn’t want to dive into it right now. She would, in time, but that time wasn’t now. So, she did what she always did—she smiled and covered her pain with it.
"We’ve talked enough about me. Tell me something new," she said, changing the subject. Nari noticed the shift and decided not to push further.
"Nothing much is happening right now, but since we’re starting our final year next week, I’m sure things will get interesting. Especially since you’re joining us," Nari smirked.
"What do you mean, ‘since I’m joining too’?" Miyeon asked, unsure.
"Girl… you’re the daughter of one of Korea’s richest men, and you’re asking me that? Are you serious right now?" Nari gave her a look of disbelief.
"As if they would even bother," Miyeon said, rolling her eyes. No one at her previous school had cared about her status, so how different could it be? Little did she know.
"You take yourself for granted, Miya," Nari sighed, her gaze softening as she watched Miyeon avoid eye contact, her focus shifting to a painting behind her.
"I don’t… it’s just how it is."
They spent the rest of the afternoon catching up on everything they had missed over the past six years. Nari filled Miyeon in on their university and the people there. Miyeon couldn’t help but feel a bit excited to start fresh in a new environment.
If only she knew what was to come.

Have a lovely day everyone!!
