"I’ve been with this team from the start," Hana said, her voice steady. "I’ve watched both Yewon and Miyeon play over the years. They’re both incredible, each with their own strengths, but we could only choose one." She paused, glancing at the team.
"And by majority decision, the new captain for the Hankuk University women’s team will be…Miyeon!"
Applause erupted around her, but Miyeon stood frozen, caught between disbelief and uncertainty. Her? Captain? The questions swirled in her mind. Could she really live up to this role? Did they truly believe in her?
"Miyeon," Hana said warmly as she rose from her seat, balancing herself on her crutches. She hobbled over, her expression a blend of kindness and understanding. "I’ve seen you lead during trials. You’re a natural at keeping everyone grounded and unified. Don’t worry—I’ll be here to support you every step of the way."
When she reached Miyeon, Hana placed a hand on her shoulder. "If you don’t want this, don’t feel pressured to accept. But know that I have complete faith in you.", Her smile held so much warmth that Miyeon felt her hesitation melting under its light.
Miyeon took a deep breath, looking around at her teammates, all of whom radiated encouragement and happiness.
All but one.
Yewon’s expression remained cold, her gaze distant and unreadable. But Miyeon pushed away the sting of it, focusing on the others.
Turning to Sohee at her side, Miyeon found her friend’s eyes filled with encouragement, gently nudging her forward. Her confidence bolstered, Miyeon took a deep breath and stepped forward to address the team, her eyes meeting Hana’s and then shifting to each of her teammates.
"It’s an honor to be chosen," she began, her voice steadying. "I know I’m still new to some of you, and that there have been setbacks…but I promise to give everything I have to this team. No matter what challenges come our way, we’ll come out on the victorious side."
Hana’s face broke into a bright smile, and before Miyeon could process what was happening, Hana let her crutches fall and reached out to pull her into a hug, stumbling slightly. Miyeon instinctively wrapped her arms around her to steady her, feeling Hana’s laugh as she whispered, "I trust you, Miyeon. You’re more than just a teammate to me. Thank you for stepping up."
Miyeon hugged her tightly, her heart swelling with gratitude. "Don’t worry, Hana—I’ll bring the trophy home to you," she said with conviction, earning a proud laugh from Hana.
A few feet away, Hara, Yejin, and Sohee shared a glance before they moved in, joining the hug until they were all bundled together, laughter filling the air.
