"If I told you my secrets,
you'd never look at me the same way."

It was the day when Miyeon would be beginning her new university year in a new university. Thanks to Nari's father's connections, they had managed to secure a shared dorm room, ensuring that Miyeon wouldn't be entirely alone in this unfamiliar environment.

Her belongings had been moved to the dorm the day before, and now, she was riding with her father to the campus. Although she had insisted on handling it herself, he had been adamant about dropping her off, and she hadn’t the heart to refuse him.

"But what if people see you?" Miyeon asked, a hint of worry in her voice as she sat in the passenger seat.

"Don't worry," her father reassured her, his tone calm. "The university is filled with children of prominent figures. Security is tight, and they’re used to keeping a low profile. No one will pay attention to us unless we draw attention to ourselves."

She nodded, his words easing her nerves a little, and turned to look out the window. Her anxiety was there, but not as overwhelming as she had anticipated.

Back in China she was so used to getting ignored and talked behind her back that she stopped giving attention to whatever they said. People's opinions stopped bothering her.

So if people here had anything to say about her she simply did not care.

Yesterday, while settling into her new dorm, she had taken an early morning tour of the campus. The university had a timeless elegance to it, with a blend of dark academia aesthetics—rich textures, vintage-inspired furniture, and modern technology coexisting in harmony. She felt an odd sense of belonging, even among the cold stone walls and shadowed corridors.

"Miya," her father’s voice broke through her thoughts. She had been drifting into her mind a lot lately. Turning to him, she hummed in acknowledgment.

"Did you take your medicine?" he asked, concern lacing his tone.

"I did," she replied.

"And you brought them with you, right?"

"Yes, Dad, I did."

He paused, his grip tightening on the steering wheel before he spoke again. "If anything happens, if anyone bothers you… let me know. I’ll handle it. And please, Miya… don’t hide it from me. Not again."

Miyeon knew what he was referring to. The memories of that dark period were still fresh in her mind, a time when she had retreated into herself, lost in a world of pain and silence. It had been a nightmare, one she never wanted to revisit. Yet, a part of her couldn’t help but hold her father partly responsible. If only he had made different choices back then, maybe things would have been different.

But there was no use in blaming him now. She had to move forward. "I will, Dad. I promise."

And promises were meant to be broken.

"We're here," he announced as they pulled into the inner grounds of the university. Miyeon looked out and saw the sprawling campus come into view.

She stepped out of the car, and her father followed, standing by her side. "Do you want me to walk you inside too?" he teased, pulling her into a hug.

"Dad!" she laughed, "I’m not a little kid anymore. I have a well functioning brain and can manage to walk on my own, you know."

"Are you sure about that brain part?" he quipped, raising an eyebrow.

"DAD!" she lightly hit his arm, and he exaggeratedly clutched at it, pretending to be hurt.

"You wound me, dear," he said dramatically, earning an eye roll from her.
