It was match day, and Miyeon's nerves were on edge.
She sat on the cold tile floor of the girls' changing room, her back pressed against the lockers. The familiar chatter of her teammates filled the space, but it barely registered with her. Instead, her fingers kept fiddling with the strap of her wristwatch, her thoughts repeatedly wandering back to that night on the hill- the laughter, the dare, the kiss.
A kiss that shouldn't have meant anything, yet somehow lingered in her mind far longer than it should. Miyeon shook her head, trying to chase away the feeling, but her lips tingled with the memory of his.
It was just a dare, she reminded herself, so why can't I stop thinking about it?
Her heart pounded fiercely in her chest, racing with a confusion she couldn't quite name. Did he feel it too? Or was it all in her head?
She questioned if these jitters, these butterflies swirling in her stomach, were even valid. Was she allowed to feel like this? The shadow of her past loomed over her thoughts, stronger than any flicker of admiration she might have had for him. Could she-should she-take the risk? Was she even capable of letting herself feel something more?
The weight of her past was like a chain, binding her tighter than any expectation from the team or the crowd outside. It wasn't just about fear-it was about the guilt. She couldn't bear the thought of someone else paying the price for loving her.
It wouldn't be fair to him.
She didn't want to be the reason someone suffered, didn't want to be the reason someone lived in constant danger, simply because of her.
Her mind spun, worry curling around her like a fog, blinding her to any trace of happiness.
A sudden warmth on her shoulder startled her, pulling her from the spiral of thoughts. The hand was rough but gentle, offering silent comfort. Miyeon slowly lifted her face from her knees, blinking in surprise at Sohee, who knelt beside her, her brow furrowed with concern.
"Miyeon, are you okay?" Sohee's voice was soft, as if she was afraid of pushing too hard.
Miyeon blinked again, realizing for the first time that she had drawn her knees up to her chest. She hadn't even noticed the way her body curled in on itself, her thoughts swallowing her whole. Her eyes darted behind Sohee to the rest of the team, still chattering away, seemingly unaware.
Sohee must have caught the flicker of panic in her eyes because she quickly added with a small smile, "Don't worry, no one else noticed. I was just about to call you over, but when I saw you sitting like that... I thought you might need a minute."
