"Silence became her
favorite way to speak."
Miyeon's first day at university was... something.
She had all her morning classes with Nari and, surprisingly, with Dokyeom and Hoshi. While Nari seemed less than thrilled about it, Miyeon was pleasantly surprised. The boys were lively and full of jokes, which helped lighten the mood, especially when the teachers weren't paying attention. Their antics had Miyeon laughing out loud, much to Nari's dismay.
She also met Seungkwan, who, while sassy when needed, was just as easygoing as Dokyeom and Hoshi. The trio, known as BooSeokSoon-a playful combination of their names-were some of the most popular guys on campus.
Miyeon quickly learned that her best friend, Nari, was also one of the famous girls, much to her chagrin. Boys constantly shot her admiring looks, something Miyeon found nauseating.
"If they keep gaping at you like that, I might actually vomit," Miyeon whispered to Nari, who only smiled.
"You get used to it," Nari replied. "Not like you wouldn't understand. You were pretty famous yourself back in school, remember?"
"That was before... not after everything," Miyeon muttered, her voice trailing off. Nari turned to her, brows knitted in concern.
"What was that?" Nari asked, eyebrows furrowed.
"Nothing," Miyeon brushed her off, and they made their way to the cafeteria.
The cafeteria was surprisingly not too crowded, something Miyeon appreciated. Crowded places always made her uneasy. Nari excused herself to get food, leaving Miyeon to find a seat. She chose a quiet table in the corner and began scrolling through her phone, lost in thought.
Suddenly, three trays appeared on the table in front of her. She looked up to see Hoshi grinning down at her, with Seungkwan and Dokyeom in tow.
"Hi!" Hoshi greeted her as he took a seat next to her. Seungkwan and Dokyeom sat across from her.
"Um... hey?" Miyeon responded skeptically.
"We thought our new friend looked a little lonely," Dokyeom began.
"So we decided to sit with you," Seungkwan finished with a wink.
"Well, thank you, but I was just waiting for-" Miyeon started but was interrupted by Nari's voice from behind her.
Miyeon was about to thank them but was interrupted by Nari's voice. "And what exactly do you three think you're doing?" Nari stood behind Miyeon, holding two trays and glaring at the boys.
"Eating?" Seokmin replied, his tone uncertain.
"I meant why are you sitting at our table?" Nari clarified, her eyes narrowing.
"I don't see your name written here," Seungkwan shot back, pretending to search the table for Nari's name, which nearly made Miyeon laugh out loud.
Nari's irritation was palpable. "Miya here was saving the seats for us," she said pointedly.
"Us? All I see is you and those trays," Seungkwan retorted, his teasing tone making Nari grit her teeth.
Before things could escalate, Miyeon quickly intervened. "Okay, that's enough," she said, stepping between them. She took the trays from Nari and placed them on the table, then turned to her friend. "Nari, I want to have lunch with them if it's okay."
"What? Really?" Nari asked, genuinely surprised.
"Yes. You can join us if you want... please," Miyeon pleaded, flashing her best smile.
Nari softened a little. "Okay, but if you need anything, just call me. I'll be with my friends. I'll meet you after lunch at the entrance," she said before waving goodbye and heading into the now more crowded cafeteria. She was not going to stop her from making new friends.
As soon as Nari left, the boys slowly began clapping, making Miyeon laugh. "Wow... you made her soft," Hoshi remarked.
"Did what?" Miyeon asked, genuinely curious.
"You don't know?" Dokyeom looked at her, surprised. "I thought you were best friends."
"Of course, she won't know, genius. She's new here," Seungkwan interjected.
"So, what don't I know?" Miyeon pressed, her curiosity now fully piqued. It seemed there were things about Nari that even she didn't know.
The three boys exchanged meaningful glances before Seungkwan spoke up. "We'll save that story for another time. Class is about to start."
Miyeon felt a surge of frustration but before she could argue, the lunch bell rang. She sighed, annoyed at being left on a cliffhanger.
"What class do you have now?" Hoshi asked as they exited the cafeteria.
"I don't have a class, but I need to go to the gym. Can you tell me where it is?" Miyeon replied after thinking for a moment.
"The gym? Why?" "No class?" Seungkwan and Dokyeom chimed in together.
"I'm trying out for the girls' basketball team. I heard they lost their best player few years back and are looking for a replacement ever since," she explained
"You play-" Dokyeom started.
"Basketball?" Hoshi finished, while Seungkwan looked at her in surprise.
"Yes. Why? Don't tell me you think girls can't play as well as boys," Miyeon began, her defensive tone rising, but Seungkwan quickly cut her off.
"Woah, calm down. No, we don't think like that. It's just that most girls here don't want to play, even if they can. Also, our university's girls' basketball team doesn't have the best reputation."
"What do you mean?" Miyeon asked, frowning. She had heard that the university's basketball team was strong, but now she realized they must have been referring only to the boys' team.
Dokyeom explained, "We have a Diamond Event every year where universities compete. Our boys' team always wins, but the girls' team usually struggles. They either come in second or don't even qualify. It's been like that ever since their best player left."
"What was her name?" Miyeon asked, intrigued.
"Choi Yewon," Hoshi replied, his tone serious.
As they walked further, Miyeon couldn't help but wonder if she could change the team's luck-or if she'd be just another name on the list of players who tried and failed.
