"I said I was fine.
I never said it didn't hurt."

After the food was served, the table buzzed with lively conversation, leaving Miyeon feeling slightly out of place. The group’s dynamic was new to her, and she found herself quietly picking at her food, unsure of how to join in. She kept her eyes on her plate, only speaking when someone directed a question her way.

“So, Miyeon,” Arin called out beside her, breaking Miyeon’s silent observation of the restaurant. “What are you majoring in?”

Surprised by the sudden attention, Miyeon instinctively clutched the ends of her sleeves under the table yet her demeanour exuded confidence, “Business with a minor in journalism,” she replied.

“Really? All of us except Yeji are majoring in business,” Arin said excitedly. Miyeon had already gathered that Arin was a vibrant and lively person, her energy contagious like Seokmin’s.

“Oh!” Miyeon nodded, turning her attention to Yeji, curious about her major. “What are you majoring in?”

“I’m a law major with a minor in business,” Yeji answered with the calm confidence that Miyeon had come to associate with her. Somehow, law seemed a perfect fit for someone with Yeji's poised and assertive demeanor.

“Miya is also on the basketball team now,” Nari chimed in, her tone brimming with pride. The mention of basketball caught the boys' attention, and they all turned to Miyeon simultaneously, their interest piqued.

“Really?” Arin asked, her surprise evident.

Miyeon nodded, sensing that their reaction was similar to what she had experienced earlier with Seokmin, Hoshi, and Seungkwan. “Yes,” she confirmed.

“Have you heard about the supposed girls’ team curse?” Arin inquired, her tone a mix of curiosity and concern.

Before Miyeon could respond, Yeji interjected, her voice firm. “You all really believe in that ridiculous rumor? It’s the 21st century, for crying out loud. It’s just an absurd tale someone spun to mess with you guys.”

“But our girls’ team has been repeatedly losing for the past three years. You can’t tell me that’s a coincidence,” Arin shot back, her belief unwavering.

Joshua joined in, his voice low but thoughtful. “I kind of believe it too.”

“Same,” Nari added, her tone more cautious.

Yeji let out an exasperated sigh, clearly fed up with the discussion. “You can’t be serious right now.”

“But think about it,” Jeonghan countered. “For three years, the girl's team has continuously lost first place, always coming in second. There must be something.”

“And before that, there was Yewon. She was on the team, and we used to win. But then she just left out of nowhere. That’s more than enough to believe in the curse,” Seungcheol added, leaning back in his seat as if the matter was settled and no more was left to argue over.

Miyeon believed all this to be bullshit.

She noticed a shift in the air, a sense that there was more to the story than they were letting on. Yet she felt no inclination to dig deeper. The idea of a curse was laughable to her, but she sensed it was a topic they took seriously.

Yeji rolled her eyes at her friends persistence. She turned to Miyeon, her expression one of exasperation mixed with encouragement. “Don’t listen to them. Just believe in yourself. All we need is that one good player who can lead us to victory, and I hope that’s you.”, she said with a smile.

Miyeon appreciated Yeji’s encouraging words but felt the need to clarify her stance. “Thanks, but I don’t believe in such things either. Our success and failures depends entirely on us and our effort. All these curse talks seem nothing more than dumb excuses.”

Everyone looked at her with their mouths slightly agape but then a small smile broke out on Yeji's face.

“I like her,” Yeji declared to Nari, her smile returning.

“Who doesn't,” Nari teased, winking at Miyeon, who couldn’t help but smile in return.

Later that night, Miyeon lay awake in her bed as the clock struck midnight. She knew she had classes the next day, but sleep eluded her. Her thoughts were scattered, her mind unable to settle on any one thing for too long.

She missed home terribly—the warmth of her mother’s hugs, the late-night talks with her father. Even her sister, Mirae, whom she often clashed with, was missed in moments like these.

Rising from her bed, Miyeon wandered over to the window. Her room offered a beautiful view of the campus pond, its calm waters shimmering under the starlight. Nari’s room, in contrast, overlooked the bustling university campus.

Miyeon gazed up at the stars, feeling a pang of longing. “How are you doing up there?” she whispered.

“It’s been a while now, and I’m trying my best to move on... but it’s difficult. But don’t worry about me. I won’t give up. I miss you so much. Just keep looking after me,” she said softly, her voice trembling as her eyes turned glassy. Memories from the past rushed in, overwhelming her.

“I wish you were here.” she whispered back, her voice breaking as she shook her head vigorously. She knew she couldn’t let herself spiral, not now, not when she was so far from home. She walked over to her nightstand and picked up her medication, swallowing it with a gulp of water.

“I still miss you, idiot,” she murmured, casting one last yearning look at the stars before returning to her bed. As she drifted into sleep, a single star twinkled above, as if smiling down at her, offering a silent reassurance.
