The tension in the air was palpable, like a string pulled so tight it was moments away from snapping. Christina’s glare bore into Alex, but the blond refused to back down, standing his ground with his trademark smug grin. Honestly, Alex might be the strongest man alive for withstanding death-inducing glares for the day.
“Alex, stop acting like you own her,” Christina snapped, crossing her arms. Her voice was laced with irritation and a touch of disbelief at his audacity. This was one of the few times you saw Christina acting so unlike herself. This was different.
“And you stop acting like you’re her keeper,” Alex retorted, his tone sharper than usual as he stood beside you, almost like a barrier.
“Y/n needs a break from all this suffocating attention, Christina. You’re not doing her any favors by clinging to her like a lifeline.” He said, doubling down on his words.
“Excuse me?” Christina’s voice rose. “I’ve been by her side through everything! Unlike you, who just barges in and demands her time without considering her feelings!”
“Oh, because monopolizing her 24/7 is totally considerate right?” Alex shot back. He gestured to you, who was caught in the middle of the escalating argument. Leon and Jeremy were caught along but they knew better than to join.
“Look at her! She’s exhausted. She doesn’t need you breathing down her neck every second of the day.”
“Stop pretending you care more than I do!” Christina retorted, stepping closer, “Y/n’s my best friend—”
“And she’s my friend too!” Alex interrupted. You, Jeremy and Leon sent him a look because he basically decided it himself but neither of you spoke.
“I’ve been patient, but you don’t get to dictate who she spends time with.” Alex added, he doesn't look like his usual self either, he's basically in disbelief at her words.
Leon, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up, “Maybe we should let Y/n decide instead of yelling over her like she’s not here?”
Jeremy nodded, for once agreeing with Leon as if they're not arguing a few minutes ago, “Yeah, kind of defeats the point if she’s just dragged around like this.”
Both Christina and Alex turned to you, their gazes expectant. You gulped at the sudden silence, mentally cursing the two for interrupting and putting the attention on you.
“Y/n,” Christina began, her voice softer this time but still firm. She returns back to the way she spoke so softly, her eyes holding the same affectionate yet begging look, “Do you want to go with Alex? Or would you rather stay with me?”
Her gaze basically begs you but it didn't serve its purpose to persuade you, in fact, it made you think otherwise.
With the weight of their stares pressed on you, you can't help but feel smaller by the second. You didn’t want to hurt Christina’s feelings for the second time but Alex’s words rang true, you need a break.
“I…” You started, your voice barely above a whisper. You took a quick glance between Alex and Christina before taking a breath. Then, without another word, you stepped behind Alex, letting your actions speak for her.
Alex’s expression softened into something almost triumphant but not smug, while Christina’s face fell into a mixture of disbelief and betrayal.
“Fine,” Christina said stiffly, her hands clenching at her sides, “If that’s what you want, Y/n.”
Alex placed a reassuring hand on your shoulder, giving Christina one last glance. “She deserves to breathe, Christina. You can’t hold onto her so tightly all the time.”
Leon and Jeremy exchanged glances, neither saying much but clearly surprised by your choice. Once again, they knew better than to interrupt, they can't risk the chance of making you hate them too.
As Alex gently guided you away, Leon finally muttered, “This is going to blow up later, isn’t it?”
Jeremy answered back, taking a look at the silent Christina, “Oh, definitely.”
As both you and Alex walked off, Alex began to speak, “Don’t worry. I’ll make sure you get the break you need.”
You didn't even know how things turned into this. Alex is the person you didn't want to hang out with before, even running away but now, it seems everything has flipped. The people you love now are the people you feel suffocated with. It's just shock, after all you didn't expect to find comfort from Alex of all people.
You could only nod, hoping that this decision wouldn’t lead to more chaos. Deep down, though, you knew it would, it always would. Like everything always has.
