The world outside Tsukiyo's and Sanemi's small hideout seemed distant, irrelevant, as they stood there, still wrapped in the rawness of their confessions.
But reality soon intruded. There was a sudden noise outside—the sound of footsteps, hurried and unsteady, echoing through the quiet village streets. Both of them instinctively stiffened, their senses sharp. Sanemi stepped back, his hand instinctively reaching for his sword.
"There is something out there," he murmured, his voice low but steady.
Tsukiyo's expression hardened as she grabbed her own weapon. Whatever emotional vulnerability they had just shared was now shelved—there was a mission at hand, and they needed to stay sharp.
As they approached the source of the noise, they found an older villager stumbling through the street, his eyes wide with terror.
"D-demons..." the man stuttered, collapsing to his knees, gasping for breath. "They're here."
Sanemi's jaw tightened as his hand wrapped around the hilt of his sword. His eyes scanned the shadows.
"Where?" he demanded, but the man could barely breathe, let alone answer.
Tsukiyo quickly knelt beside him, her heart hammering in her chest as she tried to calm the man. "We need to get him to safety," she whispered, glancing up at Sanemi.
But before they could move, a chilling growl echoed through the village—a sound they both knew too well.
The demons had arrived.
In the blink of an eye, three figures emerged from the darkness, their distorted, monstrous forms hunched and salivating. Their glowing red eyes were locked on their prey. Tsukiyo sprang to her feet, her hand gripping her blade tightly, while Sanemi stood in front of her, his sword already drawn.
"They're fast," Tsukiyo muttered, her body tensing.
"And they're hungry," Sanemi replied, his voice cold and focused. "Stay close."
The first demon launched itself at Sanemi with incredible speed, claws gleaming under the moonlight. Sanemi's reflexes were faster.
"Wind Breathing, Second Form: Claws-Purifying Wind!"
In a flash, his sword cut through the air, slicing the demon clean in half. Its body fell to the ground in a grotesque heap, but before they could catch their breath, two more charged in from opposite sides.
"Tsukiyo, on your right!" Sanemi shouted.
Tsukiyo was already moving, her senses sharp and her muscles primed.
The second demon leapt towards her with a shriek, but she pivoted gracefully, her sword arcing upward to meet the creature mid-air. The blade caught it across the chest, a sickening screech ripping through the night as black blood splattered across the ground. The demon fell to its knees, and Tsukiyo swiftly delivered a final, fatal strike to its neck.
But they weren't done yet.
Two more demons crawled out from the shadows—larger, faster, their hunger evident in their savage snarls. One charged directly for Sanemi, while the other moved toward Tsukiyo in a blur of speed.
Sanemi locked eyes with his foe and braced himself, anticipating the demon's attack. It lunged, claws extended, but Sanemi darted to the side, narrowly avoiding its swipe.
With a growl, he countered with a powerful downward slash, severing the demon's arm. It roared in fury, but Sanemi didn't let up. His movements were fluid, lethal. He dodged its attacks with ease, his blade finding its mark each time. With a swift, final strike, he decapitated the demon, its body crumpling to the ground.
Meanwhile, Tsukiyo faced the other demon, which was far quicker and more cunning than the first. It darted around her, testing her defences, its grotesque mouth stretched in a mocking grin.
Her eyes narrowed, watching its movements carefully. When it lunged, she didn't hesitate. She sidestepped, her blade cutting through the air, but the demon was faster than she expected, dodging her strike by mere inches.
Before she could recover, it was on her, claws aiming for her throat.
"Tsukiyo!" Sanemi's voice cut through the chaos, his heart clenching at the sight.
His body moved on instinct, sprinting toward her, but Tsukiyo was already reacting.
At the last second, she dropped to one knee, ducking under the demon's claws as they whistled past her head.
In the same motion, she swung her blade upward in a wide arc, catching the demon in the side. It let out a howl of pain, but it wasn't finished yet. The demon staggered, then lunged again, faster and more feral.
Tsukiyo gritted her teeth. She wouldn't let it touch her. Not this time.
"Crystal Breathing, Fourth Form: Luminous Whip!"
With precise timing, she sidestepped again, and this time, she spun with lightning speed, her sword slicing through the demon's midsection. The creature froze, its body shuddering before it collapsed into a lifeless heap.
Panting, Tsukiyo straightened her body. She looked over her shoulder just in time to see Sanemi finish off the last of the demons with a brutal, powerful slash. His sword was a blur of silver in the moonlight, and the demon fell without a sound.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Sanemi glanced at Tsukiyo, his eyes scanning her for injuries, his breathing heavy. "Are you okay?" His voice was laced with concern, though he tried to keep his tone steady.
Tsukiyo nodded, though her breath was still coming fast. "I'm fine," she replied, wiping sweat from her brow. She could see the fear in his eyes, even if he wouldn't admit it. It wasn't fear of the demons—it was fear of losing her.
Another growl interrupted their moment of calm, louder and more guttural than the rest. From the shadows emerged a much larger demon, its eyes glowing with an unnatural, malevolent light. Its muscles rippled beneath its dark skin, and its fangs dripped with venomous saliva.
Sanemi's grip on his sword tightened. "Looks like the real fight's about to begin."
The massive demon roared and lunged at them with blinding speed. Sanemi dashed forward to meet its attack head-on, his blade sparking against the demon's claws as they clashed.
The sheer force of the impact sent him skidding back a few feet, but Sanemi didn't falter.
With a fierce snarl, he pushed forward, slashing at the demon's limbs with precision and power.
Tsukiyo wasn't far behind. She darted to the demon's side, using its size to her advantage as she slashed at its legs, trying to slow it down.
The demon roared in frustration, its glowing red eyes locking onto her with a terrifying focus. It swung its massive arm in a blur of motion, aiming to crush her where she stood.
Tsukiyo barely managed to leap out of the way, but not unscathed—the force of the swing grazed her shoulder, sending a searing pain down her arm. She stumbled, her sword slipping from her grip and clattering to the ground.
"Tsukiyo!" Sanemi's shout tore through the chaos, his voice raw with panic. He surged forward, his blade slicing through the air, but the demon turned on him with a guttural snarl.
Tsukiyo reached for her sword with trembling fingers, but before she could grab it, the demon's claws came down, mere inches from her face.
Her breath caught, the world narrowing to the dark, monstrous hand descending toward her...
