The knock at the door was sharp, echoing against the silence of the house. I frowned, setting down my half-empty glass of water, as my head turned to the door. I wasn't expecting anyone. I forced myself to stand, my body feeling heavier than usual.I didn't take the time to peek through the window so you can imagine my surprise when I pulled the door open.
It was Yunho, hands in his pocket, eyes flickering from me to the side.
I was about to shut the door again when he held it open with his hand, "you're not even going to ask?" He scoffed
I let go of the door, allowing him to push it open again. For a moment, neither of us said anything. He stood there, hands shoved back into his pockets, shifting uncomfortably. It was clear he wasn't sure if he should be here either.
I tightened my grip on the doorknob, "What are you doing here?"
Yunho cleared his throat, "Your mom called me."
My jaw clenched as I face palmed myself. Of course my mother would. She has no idea Yunho wasn't the same person from the past.
"I don't need you to check up on me," I said, keeping my voice steady but firm
"I knew you'd say that," he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck, "but I still came."
I felt my nails dig into my palm. I hated that look in his eyes that I had always been oblivious to. No matter what I do, it never changes.
"You shouldn't have." I said quietly, my eyes glancing away from him
"I know," Yunho said, and there was something in his voice that made my stomach twist, "but I did."
I let out a slow breath, gripping the edge of the door. I could have just closed it. But instead, I stepped aside. Just barely.
Yunho hesitated, almost surprised by my actions, but then stepped inside, shutting the door behind him.
For the first time in a long time, I wasn't sure if I would regret it or not.
He stood just inside the doorway, suddenly finding his surroundings unfamiliar. He didn't move further in, afraid of making himself comfortable. Maybe he knew he wasn't welcome here anymore, but here he was anyway.
I folded my arms over my chest, leaning against the wall, "So, what now?"
Yunho sighed, glancing around the house like he was looking for something to say, "You're really not gonna make this easy, huh?"
I let out a dry laugh, "Should I?"
His jaw tightened, "I didn't come here to fight."
"Then why did you?" I shot back, the words coming out sharper than I intended
Yunho hesitated before answering, "I told you your mom is worried about you. She thinks you shouldn't be alone right now."
I ran a hand through my hair, frustration seeping through, "She doesn't know Yunho. She doesn't know what happened between us."
Yunho's lips pressed together and looked away, "I know that."
I scoffed, shaking my head "Then why would you come here?"
For the first time, Yunho met my eyes directly, his expression unreadable, "Because I still care, Leo. Whether you like it or not. Whether I like it or not."
His words hit me like a punch, a sharp ache deep in my chest. I hated the way he said it, like I was the one making this difficult. He was the one to throw out all those years of friendship. He knew it would happen.
