Vacation

Kai stood in front of the commissioner of the Hero Public Safety Commission, his hands tucked into his pockets as he let out a small sigh. The past battle had taken a toll on him—both physically and mentally. His suit had taken damage, but more than that, he could still feel the exhaustion in his bones.

"I need a break," Kai admitted, his voice calm but firm. "That last fight with the monster really left a mark on me. I was hoping to take some time off—just enough to rest and recharge. I'd like to take my family with me, give Melissa and Eri some time away from all this."

The commissioner, an older but sharp-eyed man, leaned forward slightly. "You're requesting vacation time?"

Kai nodded. "Yeah, just for a little while. I'll come back stronger than ever, but even Superman needs a break."

The commissioner hummed in thought, then a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "I might have an idea," he said. "What do you think about keeping an eye on the U.A. students during their upcoming assignment on Nabu Island?"

Kai raised an eyebrow. "Nabu Island?"

"Yes," the commissioner continued. "The students will be required to run their own 'U.A. Agency' without any teachers present. Given the island's low crime rate, their work will mostly consist of minor heroic deeds—helping locals, resolving small conflicts, that sort of thing. It would be the perfect environment for you to rest while still reporting back to us.

Low contact with the commission, plenty of time to recover, and you'd be able to be there for your family."

Kai considered it for a moment. It wasn't exactly the full break he had in mind, but it did sound like the best compromise. He could be there for Melissa and Eri, watch over the next generation of heroes, and still take things easy compared to his usual workload.

After a few seconds of thought, he nodded. "Alright," he said, a smirk forming. "I'll take it. I'll see you later, then."

Hours later Kai unlocked the door to his apartment, stepping inside to find Melissa and Eri sitting together on the couch. Melissa was reading a book, while Eri was doodling in a notebook, her little legs swinging off the edge of the seat. As soon as they noticed him, Eri's face lit up.

"Kai!" she cheered, hopping off the couch and running up to him. He caught her easily, lifting her up with one arm while ruffling her hair with the other.

Melissa looked up, smiling. "You're back. How'd it go?"

Kai smirked. "Hope you two are ready, 'cause we're going on vacation."

Eri gasped. "Vacation?! Where are we going?"

"Nabu Island," Kai replied. "Beaches, peace, and quiet—exactly what we need."

Melissa raised an eyebrow. "Wait, really? That's—wow, I didn't think you'd actually take a break." She crossed her arms, giving him a knowing look. "So, what's the catch?"

Kai chuckled. "I might have to keep an eye on some U.A. students while they run their own hero agency, but other than that, it's a real vacation. We'll have time to relax, enjoy the beach, and just get away from everything for a while."

Eri's eyes sparkled with excitement. "The beach?! Can we build a sandcastle?"

Kai nodded. "Of course."

Melissa grinned, closing her book and standing up. "Alright, then. Let's pack up and get going before you change your mind."

Eri cheered as she ran off to gather her things, and Kai leaned against the wall, watching them with a rare sense of ease. For the first time in a while, he was looking forward to what came next.
