The golden hues of the setting sun cast a breathtaking glow over the ocean, waves gently crashing against the shore as Kai, Melissa, and Eri enjoyed their peaceful evening. The trio had spent the day relaxing, observing the students from afar, and laughing at their antics—none of them had noticed him yet, something Kai found particularly amusing.
Melissa was still smirking at a comment Kai had made when the peace was shattered.
A thunderous explosion erupted from the harbor, shaking the ground beneath them.
Kai's sharp eyes snapped toward the source of the blast, watching as smoke and fire filled the air. His body moved before his mind caught up, instincts kicking in immediately. He shot up from his seat, his hand reaching for his wristbands—only to grasp at nothing.
His hero suit was still in the hotel room.
"Dammit," he muttered under his breath, clicking his tongue in frustration.
Melissa and Eri looked up at him, concern flashing across their faces.
"Kai?" Melissa questioned.
Kai clenched his fists, his jaw tightening.
At that moment, a massive shadow loomed over the beach as something monstrous emerged from the smoke.
A Chimera—a hulking, grotesque fusion of animalistic features—stormed onto the beach, causing destruction as its clawed feet tore through the sand. Its glowing red eyes burned with malicious intent, and its deep growl reverberated through the air.
The first to respond were the students patrolling nearby.
Ojiro, Tokoyami, Sato, and Soji were the closest, and they wasted no time engaging the beast.
Ojiro launched himself forward, his tail whipping as he attempted to strike its legs. Tokoyami sent Dark Shadow lunging toward the Chimera's chest, but the monstrous creature barely reacted. Sato, having activated his Sugar Rush, threw a heavy punch into its side, while Soji extended his arms, attempting to restrain it.
But it wasn't enough.
The Chimera barely flinched from the attacks, its strength overwhelming. With a single mighty swipe, it sent Ojiro and Sato flying, their bodies crashing into the sand. Dark Shadow recoiled, struggling against the sheer force of the beast.
Kai gritted his teeth, every nerve in his body screaming at him to move.
Melissa turned to him. "Kai, you—"
"Take care of Eri," he cut in firmly, rolling his shoulders as he cracked his neck, his muscles coiling with anticipation.
Melissa hesitated for only a second before nodding, quickly pulling Eri behind her. The little girl's big, red eyes were wide with fear, clutching the hem of Melissa's sleeve as she watched Kai step forward.
Kai exhaled sharply, his eyes narrowing as he stepped onto the battlefield. "Guess it's time to step up."
The students shouted out warnings as Kai walked straight toward the Chimera, his steps slow and deliberate.
"Get back! It's too dangerous!" Ojiro yelled, clutching his ribs from where he'd been thrown.
"You're gonna get yourself killed, old man!" Sato shouted, blood dripping from his temple.
Fumikage narrowed his eyes at the approaching figure. Something was off—this guy didn't move like a civilian at all.
But Kai only laughed. A low, confident chuckle that sent a shiver down their spines.
