Ray and Ren serve as the main protagonist and antagonist, respectively, in The Mekai as it stands today. In the story, they are both Mekai and bitter enemies. The two have been that way for years.
Both characters, along with Mikayla (you meet her in the sequel), and his dragon "friend", Falcon, were all characters from a story I created in the 2nd grade (1998-99) that carried over into my 3rd grade year (1999-2000). In that original story, Ray was a prince of a kingdom called "The Kingdom". (I was in 2nd grade, that's the best my 2nd grade self could come up with).
At the time, he was just an ordinary teenager of 16 with a pet dragon named Falcon. Sound familiar? Ray specialized in archery as well as being skilled with a sword.
Ren, on the other hand, was an evil sorcerer who always fought against Ray. He always had some kind of evil agenda that Ray was always foiling, which was his inspiration for constantly trying to kill Ray. That wasn't even the worst part. The worst part of it all was that Ren was Ray's stepfather! (What!)
