In the original concept, from 1998-2000, Ren was married to Ray's mother, who was queen of The Kingdom. This made Ren the king. Of course, she had no idea that Ren was the sorcerer who kept plaguing the kingdom and surrounding lands and she surely didn't know that he was constantly trying to kill her son.

Ray's mother never found out. If she did find out about Ren, Ren would lose his rights to The Kingdom, but Ray's mother would have been beyond betrayed and heartbroken. To save her from that, Ray never told her the truth.

He would rather keep his mother from the truth than to see her hurt by it, regardless of how many times he wanted to tell her (now that's love!). However, foiling Ren's plans and constantly denying Ren of his demise made it all the more worthwhile for him.

How's that for a step-parent, step-child relationship?
