Ray's last name had gone through a couple of changes as well. His name was going to be Raymundo Takato. That last name was chosen because (spoiler alert) Ray's orphaned father was taken in and raised by a Japanese family, also with the Takato last name.
Later, Ray's name was changed to Raymundo Takeru, which roughly means "Warrior" in Japanese. This name was chosen as a play on the fact that Ray is a powerful warrior.
Ultimately, the decision was made to drop surnames altogether seeing as to how it wouldn't matter too much- the story itself is already out of the norm enough (Lol).
