In an earlier concept of the story, Thunder and Lightning were set to "kill" Ren before venturing out to assault Ray and friends. In reality, they would have killed a "clone" of Ren. It was decided that Ren would gain the upper hand in the final product in order to show off Ren's powers a little more.
Although it's not revealed in the story, The Thunder Bros. traveled to a remote location, far from the United Kingdoms, and warmed up their powers by creating a devastating thunderstorm that wiped out all the wildlife and destroyed an entire forest.
