Piccolo, a character from Akira Toriyama's manga, Dragon Ball, is from Planet Namek. That makes him a Namekian!
The word "Nomekian", used to describe the Mekai is based off of that. They are referred to as Nomekians because they originate from the lost continent of "Nomekia". Both terms were based off of Piccolo's race, the Namekians.
