Mai gained her name from Mai Valentine, a character from Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Her character was originally created to be the Legolas to Ray's Aragorn as well as a capable female counterpart to Ray.
In earlier developments, she was blonde with blue eyes. She was changed to be a green-eyed ginger when the story was actually put into writing.
