In order for her to completely be a female counterpart to Ray, it was fitting for Mai to share the same fighting style as him. However, Mai is more aggressive than Ray.
Mai uses a dual-sword fighting style. This was inspired by Asajj Ventress, a character introduced in the 2003 Star Wars: Clone Wars series.
