Yin was chosen to be a female and Yin was chosen to be male in order to complement their respectable elements: water and fire.
The symbol of Yin and Yang, which represents light and dark, is usually associated feminine (yin) and the masculine (yang) qualities of every living person.
Of course, when these characters were created, I was unaware of any of this. It's amazing what you learn through research, huh?
