Ren's hubris basically sealed his fate. Here are the main reasons how:
1. By cursing Ray-rather than killing him- he led to a chain of events which set Ray on the path to reaching his potential.
2. By making himself a demon, he eliminated Ray's prohibitions about killing a human being.
3. Ray was mainly able to push the boundaries of his limits because of Ren's constant gloating about the mistreatment of his subordinates.
4. By opening the Gates of Oblivion during the final battle, he set himself up for the prophecy to be fulfilled.
