Chapter Twenty-Three - Now Who I Expected To See First Thing

I pull up outside of Kade's apartment building with coffee in hand. I thought I would stop by before we head to the office. I had a lot of fun with him last night. I always do. I like that he doesn't care if I ask him to leave straight after. It keeps things casual. It is early, so the service button to get inside will still work, it doesn't stop until eight. I didn't tell him I was coming. I am sure he won't mind me showing up. Perhaps we can have a repeat from last night to start our day off because we have another hectic day and a late night ahead of us.

I arrive at his apartment door, knocking loudly. It takes a minute, but the door finally opens, and it isn't Kade standing there.

"Bethany, what are you doing here?"

Why the hell is my sister here and in what looks like Kade's clothes? Did he leave mine last night and call her? What the fuck is he playing at? Does he want the best of both worlds?

She smirks. "Oh, wouldn't you like to know? What are you doing here at this time?"

He fucked my sister? I probably shouldn't be surprised. But if he wants to fuck her, then he sure as hell isn't doing the same with me.

"We have an early start today. I need to discuss a few things with him. Where is he?"

She twirls her hair around her finger. "In the shower. You can come in and wait."

"No, thank you. I will see him at the office." I reply and walk away.

I don't want to see him right now. I am mad. I may not have the right to be mad since we are only having sex, but even with that, some lines shouldn't be crossed. He is an idiot for getting involved with her, especially since he knows what she can be like. Perhaps, he likes the crazy. Either way, I am done with him. He will learn the hard way from his own mistakes.

I shake my head and toss his coffee in the trash, heading to the office to start my day. At least I won't have the distraction in the form of the damn sex god! I push all thoughts of him to the back of my mind. It doesn't take long to arrive at the office. By the time I reach it, I have two missed calls from Kade. Bethany must have told him I came by. I won't call him back.

I stroll inside and settle at my desk. Thankfully, I ordered an iced coffee, or it would be cold by the time I got around to drinking it. I get straight to work, making sure everything is ready for today. There is a lot to be done and meetings to be attended.

At eight o'clock on the dot, my office door opens, and Kade walks in.

"Good morning." He chirps, smiling brightly at me.

"I am surprised my sister allowed you to come to work. I thought she would have locked you in and forced you to stay." I reply, sarcasm dripping in every word.

His entire face changes. His smile fades and is replaced with a frown.

"Wait, what? How did you know she was at my place?"

She didn't tell him I was there? I am shocked. I thought she would have the second I left.

I stand and rest my hands on my desk. "Tell me, Kade. Did you call her as soon as you left my place? One sister isn't enough. You want the best of both worlds? Guess what? You aren't getting it. My sister is welcome to you because I don't want you if you are screwing her. Even I have my limits and way more respect for myself than that." I snap, my hands balling.

I shake my head and go to walk away, but before I manage to take a few steps, Kade grabs me to stop me and brings me around to face him, pulling me to his chest.

"Blythe, I swear, nothing happened between Beth and me."

"You expect me to believe that? She was in your clothes. She seemed very pleased with herself when she answered your door."

Kade sighs. "Nothing happened. She called me drunk last night. She had lost her bag and didn't have her keys to get into her home. She said she couldn't get a taxi because she was too drunk. The last place I wanted to take her was to my place, but when I suggested somewhere else, like your parents or even yours, she refused. I am sorry, Blythe. I couldn't leave her on her own."

I scoff and shake my head. "It was obviously part of her plan. She doesn't need a key to get into her apartment. She uses codes to get in. She played you. Though I know how convincing Beth can be, I don't know if I believe you that nothing happened."

My sister has always had a way of getting everything she wants.

"I had a feeling she was up to something. I promise, Blythe, nothing happened. She tried, but I rejected her. I meant what I said, I wasn't interested in her. I am happy with our arrangements."

I study him closely, trying to work out whether he is being truthful. After a moment, I nod. He is telling the truth. I know what my sister is like.

"You have to watch yourself, Kade. Even though you made it clear more than once that you aren't interested, she won't back off. If she ever tries anything like this again, you need to call me. I don't want her dragging you into her craziness, but I also don't want my sister to get hurt."

"Hopefully, it won't come to that. Try and not stress too much, okay?"

"I will try, but can't make any promises."

It is in my nature to stress. Kade lances around before he reaches down and pecks my lips. "Let's use work as a distraction."

"Good idea."

I can't let my sister get in my head. I have too much work too. I hope she doesn't tell my father that things are going well with her and Kade. He will believe everything she says. With any luck, someone else will show up soon and steal her attention.

"What is first on our agenda?"

"We need to make sure everything is ready for our meetings today. I have made a start, but you should go over everything, and we can finish it off together." I smile.

He nods, and we settle down at my desk to finish off. Everything needs to be perfect because, even though I am in charge, some people will try to bring me down. I always need to be prepared for this, even though they will never succeed.
