The moonlight shimmering on the waters was a soothing sight that eased your troubled mind, the gentle lapping of the waves on the shore creating white noise that silenced your thoughts. The sounds of the ocean was the only comfort you had at the moment. Right now you craved any distraction you could, grasping for even a second of peace.
Things were disastrous to say the least. In fact, you might've been the most unlucky person on earth. Bills were piling up and your paychecks barely covered them from month to month. Your car might as well have been on its last leg, or wheel, due to how often it broke down. Every penny you earned seemed to vanish, going towards another bill or repairing things in your home. You did your best to fix whatever you could on your own, relying on YouTube videos and the occasional help from coworkers who knew more about that kind of stuff, but you could only do so much. Your job was a prison, your boss sucked, but the only reason you stayed was for the money. You'd been searching for a different job, but that was a dead end. You either weren't qualified or someone else was hired instead. Someone who was probably more experienced than you.
Your bare feet sank into the wet sand, shoes in hand as you took your nighttime coastline stroll. The warm waves lapped the tops of your feet in a soothing manner. If only it were able to wash away your problems too and take them out into the ocean never to be seen again. You sighed under your breath, picking up a smooth stone, feeling the weight of it in your palm before tossing it into the dark waters with a shout of frustration. You spent far too long bottling it all up and needed to get some of the pent-up feelings out. Even the crests of the waves seemed to get choppier, mirroring how you felt inside.
Normally, you wouldn't mope around and feel sorry for yourself, but you'd put up with too much. You were at your breaking point. If there were a word to describe how you felt in that moment, it would be miserable. Hopeless, even. On the bright side, you weren't homeless and the things you owned worked most of the time, but you were unhappy. You continued your walk, feet dragging pathetically through the sand. No one was out at this hour strolling the shore, just you and your heavy thoughts. Your mind was a tumultuous storm of negativity swirling in an endless loop with no solution. Your problems couldn't be fixed. Not unless some miracle happened and you got offered a well-paying job or your boss suddenly decided to have a heart for once and give you a raise.
You reached for another stone, chucking it into the choppy waves with a grunt. A lump had started to form in your throat and your breathing was more labored as you fought back tears. Don't cry. You told yourself. Then, a voice reached your ears. It was distant, but close all at the same time. You paused, searching for anyone that could be out on the beach with you, but there wasn't a soul in sight. Taking a step forward, your feet began leading you towards the male's voice, automatically following the pleasant sounds that beckoned you forward. The words he sang were full of sorrow that made your already aching heart squeeze tightly. At the same time, it was soothing too, full of understanding and it resonated with you. His voice was hauntingly beautiful and cast a haze over your mind that muddled your thoughts. It called you towards it and all you wanted to do was find the source of that entrancing melody.
