Once again, they were stuck in volleyball. This year seemed less tense than before, more so because they knew that there was only a year and a half left to go before there was no need to worry anymore.
This gym class, despite the repetition, struck Y/N as different this year. It seemed like nobody was fully aware of what they were doing.
Then again, they admitted to themselves that some of the topic material was either redundant, or their application was nonsense.
Funnily enough, Catra had recently been introduced to this class, and it was found out that she shared this class with Y/N, so... it was going to be an interesting time, for sure.
"Heads up!" They called out, unable to reach their arm out to receive it.
"Out!" Mermista called.
The ball bounced just outside the line, Y/N sighing in relief as it did. Even though nobody was counting points, even though this hardly was a real game, there was still that sense of competition bleeding through them.
"Damn it..." one of the students grumbled, having been the one to spike it down originally.
"How's your shoulder been feeling? Did it scar over?" Mermista wondered with a slight squint, walking up to them as the teacher called for a short break.
The squeaks of shoes reverberated across the gymnasium, her, Y/N and a few others just talking amongst each other.
"I was checking in the locker room and--yeah... it scarred..." they pouted.
"Now you can show it off to people. They'll think you're cool," She smirked with a nod.
"Are you insinuating I wasn't already pretty fly?" They leaned over, a finger across their chin.
"Shut up and play the game!" They heard someone cut them off.
"STUFF IT!" Their reply was immediate.
"Adora saw me skating the other day when I still had the sling. We had a long talk after that," they continued, stepping back into position.
"I heard. You two made up?" Mermista rooted her feet back in her spot.
"Yeah..."
Technically... I started that mess...
So... it was my own fault. I'm just lucky Adora is as forgiving as she is... if she were anything like my mother or...
Sometimes I still wonder if she's within her right to just push me away.
I've caused a lot more harm than good.
"Uhm--hello?" Mermista waved her hand around in their face, finally snapping them out of that trance.
"We made up. We made up."
"Made out?"
"WHAT THE--SHUT UP!" Their cheeks lit up like a firework beside a bonfire.
"It was my own fault anyway. Adora was right to chew me out," Y/N crossed their arms, waiting for another chance ball to shoot on by.
Catra stood in the back end of the lineup, up next to serve. She observed the conversation as it was, and Y/N swore they could feel her eyes burrowing into them just at the mention of Adora.
"Had she not have... things could have been a lot worse."
After a few more serves from the other side, the game was all tied up. Now it was Catra's turn to serve the ball.
