Rhythm’s phone screen lit up one last time before he locked it and placed it on the nightstand. He was lying on his side, still in a t-shirt, scrolling through messages from his dad’s security team. Ada sat at the edge of the bed, staring at his hands. He knew this behavior—Rhythm wasn’t ignoring him, but he was controlling himself, bottling up his emotions so he wouldn’t explode at Ada.
Ada bit his lip. How do I even start talking to him? he thought. Rhythm looked calm, but Ada knew better—this was the kind of calm before a storm. In the end, Ada chose silence, curling up beside him until he drifted off to a restless sleep.
The next morning, Rhythm drove him to school as usual. The ride was quiet, the tension heavy between them. When they arrived, Ada was startled to see three tall men standing near the entrance, all in black suits.
He turned to Rhythm, confused. “Rhythm… what is this?”
Rhythm didn’t flinch. “I asked Uncle Matt to send his men to watch over you.”
Ada frowned. “For what?”
Rhythm’s tone was clipped but calm. “For your safety. Because of Anggie.”
Ada’s brows furrowed, his heart beating faster. “You don’t have to do this!”
“Yes, I do.” Rhythm’s voice dropped lower, firm but pleading. “You don’t know what she’s capable of, Ada.”
Ada’s voice rose, frustration spilling out. “So you know her? And you never told me?”
Rhythm tightened his grip on the steering wheel. “Yes. I know her. I know her family.”
Ada’s chest tightened. “Then why didn’t you tell me before? Why keep it from me?!”
“Because—”
“Because what?!” Ada snapped, his voice trembling. “Do you not trust me enough?!”
Rhythm shut his eyes for a moment, taking a breath. “Love… that’s not what I meant.”
“Then what?!”
Rhythm finally looked at him, his dark eyes serious. “Anggie and her family are part of the underground world. Kane’s world. To make it simple—Kane’s family has rivals. Dangerous rivals. Anggie is being used as a weapon to destroy anyone tied to the Willson name—you included.”
Ada froze, his anger faltering.
“When I told Dad and Mom last night,” Rhythm continued, softer now, “Uncle Matt sent his men immediately to protect you. To protect us. This isn’t about control, Ada. This is about keeping you alive.”
Rhythm reached over, his hand covering Ada’s. “Please don’t get me wrong. Please just cooperate with me. I promise—your family is protected too. They have guards around your house. You’re safe now.”
Ada swallowed hard, the fight draining out of him. He nodded slowly, still shaken. “Okay… I’ll try.”
Ada’s POV:
Garden that night…
I can still remember Anggie’s voice trembling when she said it.
“I’m pregnant, Ada… and you’re the father.”
My whole world stopped. My legs nearly gave out. I wanted to deny it, laugh it off, run away—but I couldn’t.
Now, days later, her calls and messages keep coming. I don’t answer. I can’t.
