Ada’s chest tightened when he saw Aiden’s tear-streaked face. His little boy clung to him like his life depended on it, tiny arms wrapped tightly around his neck.
“Aiden, baby…” Ada whispered softly, brushing the damp curls away from his son’s forehead. “What happened? Hmm?”
But Aiden just shook his head, his small sobs muffled against Ada’s shoulder.
“M-Mommy, i want to go home… please…” Aiden’s voice was broken, his little hands gripping the back of Ada’s shirt.
Ada swallowed hard, feeling his son’s fear seep into him like ice water. Whatever happened here, it must have shaken him deeply. He nodded, rocking Aiden gently in his arms.
“Okay, sweetheart. We’ll go home now. Don’t cry anymore, Mommy’s here.”
“Mommy, he won’t stop crying,” Treycie said softly, looking worried as she clutched her doll. “He just said he wants you.”
Ada gave her a tired smile and stroked her hair. “Thank you for staying with him, Treycie. You did well.”
Then he looked at Treyton, who was standing behind her, concern on his face.
“He just suddenly cry, Ada,” Treyton explained quietly. “One moment he was coloring, the next he was crying and saying he wanted to go home.”
Ada nodded, not trusting his voice yet, too focused on calming his son. “I’ll talk to him later. Thanks, Treyton.”
He turned to leave, but then Ceidence’s calm voice stopped him.
“He is here.”
The words froze Ada on the spot. Slowly, as if his body was no longer entirely his own, he lifted his gaze toward the grand staircase.
And there he was.
Rhythm.
The man Ada had missed, dreamed of, and longed for these past five years. Standing tall, elegant as ever, but his face was unreadable—cold, distant, as though the years hadn’t softened him at all.
Their eyes met.
For a heartbeat, Ada forgot how to breathe. His heart thudded painfully in his chest, his arms tightening around Aiden instinctively. There was so much he wanted to say, so much he wanted to ask, but no words came.
Rhythm’s jaw tightened, and without a word, he turned on his heel and walked away.
Ada stood there, rooted to the spot, his pulse ringing in his ears. He bit the inside of his cheek, forcing his tears back, and turned to Ceidence.
“Thank you,” Ada said softly, his voice trembling. “Thank you for taking care of Aiden. I… I really appreciate it.”
Ceidence’s expression softened, and he nodded. “He’s a good kid. You did well, Ada.”
Ada managed a small, grateful smile, then kissed Aiden’s head and whispered, “Let’s go home, baby.”
He carried his sleeping son out of the mansion, but inside, Ada’s heart was a storm.
Ada buckled Aiden carefully into his car seat, brushing his fingers gently over his son’s damp cheeks. Aiden’s little face was still flushed from crying, but his breathing had evened out, his tiny chest rising and falling steadily.
