"Stupid bloodly shopping. Stupid bloodly stairs. Stupid bloodly caretaker." You muttered angrily to yourself as you heaved your shopping up the stairs. The lift in your block of flats was broken yet again, and nobody seemed in a hurry to fix it, so you were lugging bags of food shopping up four steep flights of stairs. You could feel the plastic carrier bags straining with the weight of your shopping, and tried to speed up a little. Stubbing your toe on one of the steps you yelled out in pain, just as the handle on one of your bags snapped.
"Oh for god's sake!" You set about trying to find a way to carry the bag, transferring the rest of the bags to your other hand. You'd just about managed to balance them and yourself when you felt the weight in one of the bags shift, and heard a crash.
"I give up." You groaned, looking down to see that one of the bags had split, and it's contents had now been emptied onto the floor.
"You don't look like you're having much luck there." A voice said from behind you, a hint of laughter in their voice.
"Let me help." You looked up to see who it was.
"I'm Josh by the way, I just moved into a flat on the third floor."
"Thanks, I'm Y/N." You said with a smile as Josh helped you to distribute the items, which were strewn across the stairway, between the other bags. He picked up the majority of your shopping bags, and you grabbed the remaining two, before walking up the last flight of stairs to your flat. You shifted both shopping bags into one hand and pulled your key from your pocket to unlock the door. Flinging it open you walked in and dumped the bags onto the floor.
"Where do you want me to put these?" He asked, referring to the shopping bags he was holding.
"Just dump them on the floor somewhere." You said with a smile. "Thanks for helping, it would have taken me forever to get them upstairs by myself." You laughed.
"No problem." He said as he put your shopping on the floor next to the door.
"Do you want a drink while you're here? Tea? Coffee? Beer?" You offered.
"Thanks, but I should probably get going now." He said turning to leave.
"Okay, thanks again for helping me. It was nice to meet you Josh." You said, smiling at him again.
"Nice to meet you too Y/N." He replied, returning the smile. "I'll see you around sometime?" You nodded as he left, closing the door behind him, and you set about putting your shopping away.
-------
"Hi Claire." You greeted your friend(and co-worker) as you walked into the bar where you worked.
"Y/N! I thought tonight was your night off?" She said, giving you a hug.
"I said I'd do overtime. I need the money, and it's not like I have anything better to do." You sighed, taking off your jacket. You walked through to the back and hung it on the cloak hook, then went back to the bar.
"What can I get you?" You asked a customer who was waiting.
"Jack Daniels and Coke please." He requested. You nodded and turned to sort the drink.
"Attractive guy at ten o'clock." Claire informed you. You laughed at her. She had a habit of informing you every time she found someone attractive.
You glanced up as you poured the customers drink. The 'attractive guy' was Josh. You handed the customer his drink and put the money he gave you in the till. Claire saw the look of recognition on your face as you glanced over at Josh again.
"Know him?" She inquired. You gave a slight nod.
"He just moved into a flat on the floor below me." You told her.
------
"Drowning your sorrows?" You asked, walking up to Josh, who after half an hour was still sat alone, and was now starring into his drink. He still hadn't noticed that you were there. He looked up at you and smiled.
"I'm meeting some mates here but they're running late, so I'm left looking like a loner." He said.
"Aww diddums."
"You work here then I take it?" He asked. You nod your head.
"I'd better go serve." You said, noticing two girls waiting at the other end of the bar. Just then two guys walked into the bar, and you could almost immediately tell they were Josh's friends. He turned around as soon as he heard them ans went over to meet them as you walked to the other end of the bar and took the girls' orders.
-------
You sighed to yourself as you walked around collecting glasses. Your shift was nearing its end and you couldn't wait to go home and snuggle up under your duvet. Josh and his friends were still sat at the bar drinking and laughing, there was a group of girls on a hen night in the corner who looked totally wasted and seemed to be getting very emotional, and pretty much everyone in the place seemed at least a little tipsy by now.
"A'ight darlin'?" A clearly drunk man said, slurring his words as you continued to collect glasses.
"I think you've had a bit too much to drink." You replied, feeling a little uncomfortable. The man moved a little closer and you could smell the stench of alcohol on his breath. He looked about forty at least, and was leering at you.
"What's a pretty girl like you doing workin' 'ere?" He said, raising a hand and touching your cheek. You turned your face away so he couldn't touch it, and took a step back to distance yourself from him, but found your back against the wall. He moved closer to you, almost close enough for you to feel his breath against your skin.
"I think you need to go home now." You said, trying to stay polite. You were used to handling drunk guys at the bar, but not when they pretty much had you pinned against the wall.
"Don't you wanna have a bit o' fun?" He leered.
"No, and you've really had too much to drink." You snapped, getting antsy.
"Aw come on doll." He said. The stench of alcohol on his breath was almost overpowering, and you had to keep your face turned away from him to avoid throwing up from the overwhelming smell.
"Come on mate, she said no." A familiar voice said.
"What's it to you?" The man replied. He took a step back from you and you turned your head to face him again so you could see what was happening. You turned to see him squaring up to Josh.
"Just leave her alone eh?" Said Josh.
"and what are you gonna do if I don't?" The drunk man said, getting more confrontational.
"How about you take this and get a taxi home? Or at least go find another bar to drink in." Josh suggested, pulling a ten pound note from his pocket and offering it out to the man. There was a slightly tense moment where nobody said anything, but the man shrugged and snatched the money from Josh's hand. You breathed a silent sigh of relief as the man staggered off in the direction of the door, and you relaxed a little.
"Thanks." You mumbled with a smile, a little shaken up.
"No problem." Josh said flashing you a wide smile. "I wasn't just gonna sit back and watch..."
"You know, that's the second time today you've helped me out." You pointed out as you walked back to the bar, Josh following behind you.
"So it is." He laughed. "Maybe you could return the favour?" You looked at him a little confused.
"What do you mean...?" You questioned warily.
"Well I was thinking that seeing as I've been your hero and everything today." He began sarcastically. "You might just have to let me take you out on a date."
"Oh really?" You said, laughing inwardly.
"Well I think it's only fair, don't you?"
"I guess it is." You laughed.
"Tomorrow then? about 7pm?"
"Tomorrow at seven it is." You grinned.
