This is a poem I wrote for class. There is a reference to Plato's Allegory of the Cave which is a theory about prisoners trapped in a dirty cave since birth who don't know they are prisoners. There is also a bit of a reference to The Truman Show, a movie about a man living in a utopia that's not as happy and pretty as it may seem.

Slimy walls
Painted in pastels
Strange shadows
With smiling faces
Binding chains
Just loose enough
To pretend they’re not even there
Here in Plato’s Basement
Where the your every move is seen
Calculated
Recorded
You are being watched
And there is nothing you can do about it
Nothing
But stand in horror
As life goes on around you
You may shout all you wish
They will still not see anything but
This picturesque
Happy home they’ve given you
A utopia
That cannot survive
It is useless
To beat your fists against the walls
For they will only grow closer
With each pounding fit
You will be defeated
You will not succeed
You are stuck here
In this hole
With shiny doorknobs
And un-illuminating candles
Forever
