Lost in Translation

Some things get lost in the generations

Words and ideas and thoughts passed down

Get muddled along the way

What might have been thought of as bad when my parents grew up

May be acceptable in casual conversation now

Things they said then

May have a completely different meaning now

We seem to forget that

When we giggle at a bad word we see in Shakespeare

That really wasn’t a bad word to them

Or when our parents scold us for saying a word

At the dinner table that wasn’t right in their time

But we are allowed to say at church today

Some things just seem to get lost in translation

So we are stuck watching our tongue

Around everyone

Trying to remember to say the right thing around the right person

Trying, trying to please

To not upset anyone else

But losing ourselves along the way
