Up and Down

I want to ask them,

“Why should you have to take off work?

It’s only a doctor’s appointment.”

But I know I can’t

Because I know what I want to hear

And it won’t be what is actually said

I want them to say,

“You’re right!

Why should we have to go?”

Because then I know how insignificant it is

How little it matters

But that is not what would be said

They are both coming

Both my parents

That’s how I know this is serious

That’s how I know this is important

It’s significant

And I don’t want it to be

For once can things in my life not be major?

Why is everything a high and a low

Up and down

Black and white
